Wetaskiwin RCMP warn public of grandparent scam

The Wetaskiwin RCMP have received several reports of attempted grandparent scams in the community.  

The suspects are claiming to be a “lawyer” for their loved ones who have recently been incarcerated.

This scam consists of the “lawyer” using the guise that the family’s loved one has been hurt, is currently incarcerated and as a result requires money for bail. The “lawyer” will send someone to the residence to collect the money.

They appear to be targeting elderly people. This scam has occurred in Red Deer, Edmonton and other surrounding areas.

Two arrested after RCMP vehicle gets rammed Friday afternoon

On Friday April 26th at approximately 2:30 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle located in a parking lot on the north side of Red Deer.

When members arrived, two individuals were observed standing beside the vehicle. The pair then entered the vehicle and used it to ram the officers police vehicle.

Following this, the two suspects attempted to flee on foot, but were quickly arrested. Multiple charges are currently pending against two people.

Temporary road closure begins Saturday in Red Deer

The ramp connecting southbound 67 Street and Riverside Drive will close from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 for construction work.

Drivers are reminded to slow down when approaching or driving in construction areas and to obey all signs.

Four arrested in 2020 murder of Blackfalds resident

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have charged 4 individuals in relation to the 2020 homicide of 38-year-old Blackfalds resident Ryan James Gudwer.

During this four-year investigation, officers have undertaken a plethora of investigative steps including forensics, surveillance, obtaining judicial authorizations and speaking to witnesses.

RCMP advise of possible traffic disruptions due to protests this weekend

Central Alberta RCMP are advising motorists of potential traffic disruptions over the weekend due to an ongoing protest occurring on the QE II at the Juniper Lake Rest stop near Lacombe.

“Disruptions to traffic flow from the protest on the QE II has been minimal at this point,” says Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, “With fairly good weekend weather we can expect an increase in protestors. This combined with traffic congestion could present a safety issue.”
