Lacombe residents encouraged to treat water as a precious resource   

Lacombe City Council is encouraging residents and businesses to avoid using more water than they typically do.  

"Council encourages residents to be mindful in their water use habits, particularly over the summer months," Mayor Grant Creasey said. "Our resident's ongoing dedication to water conservation is admirable, and I'm sure that will continue going forward as Albertans face uncertain drought conditions across the province."  

Poll suggests half of Canadians have negative opinion of latest Liberal budget

A new poll suggests the Liberals have not won over voters with their latest budget, though there is broad support for their plan to build millions of homes.

Just shy of half the respondents to Leger's latest survey said they had a negative opinion of the federal budget, which was presented last Tuesday. 

Only 21 per cent said they had a positive opinion, and one-third of respondents said they didn't know or preferred not to answer. 

Border agency eyes smartphone facial recognition system amid privacy concerns

Travellers would be able to use facial recognition technology to identify themselves through their smartphones when crossing the border under a planned federal project.

The Canada Border Services Agency says the initiative would allow for a faster and more seamless travel experience.

The federal government recently issued a notice seeking technical solutions from possible vendors, an opportunity worth up to US$25 million.

The system would match a photo from a traveller's passport with a selfie taken via a mobile device.

Police recover stolen property in Mountain View County

On April 22, officers with the RCMP Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) were investigating property crime in the Mountain View County when they observed a white GMC Sierra.

The truck had an obstructed licence plate and was towing a flat deck trailer and a skid steer. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. 

As a result of the traffic stop, it was determined that the GMC Sierra had been stolen out of Crossfield, the black tilt deck trailer had been stolen out of Calgary, and the Caterpillar skid steer had been stolen from Okotoks.

Central Alberta artist finds joy through unique art

Artist, Vicki Sullivan, is bringing the unique art form of needle felting to the upcoming Encore Art Show and Sale.  

Throughout her life, Sullivan experimented with drawing, pastels, water colour, acrylic painting, clay modelling, and even glassblowing, but it wasn’t until she was introduced to wool needle felting that she found her true passion.  

Sylvan Lake Fire called to vegetation fire Tuesday afternoon

Just before 5:00 Tuesday afternoon, Sylvan Lake Fire Department was dispatched to a vegetation fire in an open field south of Memorial Trail and west of the Vista community.

Although there were no structures in the immediate area, the dry conditions and wind were a concern.

The fire was also burning a line of trees that are on the perimeter of the field.

There are no reports as to the cause of the fire, but residents are reminded to be extra careful this Spring with the continuing dry conditions.

Checking out the Prairie Cattle Marketing Report 

The Manitoba weekly auction mart report for last week shows feeder steer prices dropped ranging from an average of $442.50  per cwt for the 401 to 500 pound weights to $314.25 per cwt for the 801 to 900 pound category.  The biggest drop $11.93 per cwt came in the 501 to 600 weight category dropping to an average of $413.25 per cwt, the biggest increase $7.65 per cwt was in the 900+ category up $7.65 for an average of $276.56.
