Red Deer Food Bank seeking community support as demand increases

The Red Deer Food Bank is asking for support as the needs of the community outpace funding resources.

“The Red Deer Food Bank is in an interesting place. People are making donations, but we are gathering about the same amount of food and donations to try and feed twice as many people,” Mitch Thomson, Red Deer Food Bank Executive Director said. “What that's done to us over the last two years is it's depleted our reserves.”

Large study shows caribou herds in Alberta, B.C., growing from wolf culls, cow pens

Fresh research suggests western Canada's once-dwindling caribou numbers are finally growing.

But the same paper concludes the biggest reason for the rebound is the slaughter of hundreds of wolves, a policy that will likely have to go on for decades.

"If we don't shoot wolves, given the state of the habitat that industry and government have allowed, we will lose caribou," said Clayton Lamb, one of 34 co-authors of a newly published study in the journal Ecological Applications.

"It's not the wolves' fault."

Cattle farmers preparing for dry season

Cattle farmers in the Central Alberta region are preparing for drought conditions this season.

The impacts of dry conditions from last year have carried over this year and are still affecting the soil.

“We need a lot of precipitation in all forms to remove the soil deficit for moisture,” Research scientist, who specializes in beef production systems at the Lacombe Research and Development Centre Dr. Hushton Block said. “We depend on the accumulation of snow melt in the spring to provide, in essence, a glass of water to help carry through the growing season.”
