Cattle farmers preparing for dry season
Cattle farmers in the Central Alberta region are preparing for drought conditions this season.
The impacts of dry conditions from last year have carried over this year and are still affecting the soil.
“We need a lot of precipitation in all forms to remove the soil deficit for moisture,” Research scientist, who specializes in beef production systems at the Lacombe Research and Development Centre Dr. Hushton Block said. “We depend on the accumulation of snow melt in the spring to provide, in essence, a glass of water to help carry through the growing season.”
Olds RCMP investigating suspected arson
On April 19, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Olds RCMP and Olds Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Olds Association for Community Living.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the building had been unlawfully entered and there was a vehicle on fire in the garage.
The Fire Investigator attended, and at this time, the fire is considered to be suspicious. The building was also spray painted.
Lacombe Pickleball Club tournament coming up in May
The Lacombe Pickleball Club will be hosting a fun tournament, coming up on May 5th at Burman University.
Marilyn Maloney, Secretary for the club talked about the event. "We officially formed in April of 2023 so we decided we would have a fun little tournament. We rented gym space at Burman University for that day. The tournament is named in honor of one of our dear founding members who recently died from cancer."
Red Deer by-election polls open
Today is by-election day for the City of Red Deer.
There are 10 candidates in the running to fill a vacant councillor position.
Voting stations are open at Parkland Mall, Baymont by Wyndham Red Deer, and Salon B at the Prairie Pavilion at Westerner Park.
Voting is open today (April 22) from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Student Art Exhibition and Competition now open at LMC
Artwork is now on display at the Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC) for the Student Art Exhibition and Competition.
Artwork from junior and senior high school students throughout the Wolf Creek Public School division will be on display until April 27, as part of the Encore Art Show and Sale.
Rimbey AHS evening support program hours change
Alberta Health Services (AHS) Rimbey adult day support program hours of operation have changed.
Six-hour adult day support programs are still offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays but now the hours are from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The adult day support program was previously offered from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Fear of drought prompts major water-sharing agreements
Due to the threat of drought this Spring and Summer, 70% of licensees in the Red Deer River basin have agreed to reduce the water they use if severe drought conditions develop. Also included in an agreement released on Friday, 90% of the water allocated in the Bow and Oldman basins will be reduced.
The landmark agreements will let more Albertans access water in a drought and reduce the negative impacts on communities, the economy and the environment.

Funding awarded to support development between Red Deer and County
The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County have been awarded grant funding from the Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) Program.
Through the program, $100,000 has been allocated for joint regional growth and economic development.
RDCRS student artwork on display
Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) St. Martin de Porres Grade 4 and 5 students' artwork is being featured until the end of April.
The exhibition showcases approximately 90 pieces of artwork in two showings.
Grade 4 students embarked on a boutique art project, beginning with a piece of white fabric which was transformed using wax stamping and dyeing techniques.
