Volunteers needed to "Clean Up" Blackfalds starting Monday

The Town of Blackfalds is calling for volunteers to help clean up the town April 22nd to May 4th.

You are being asked to register, then pitch in with your family, friends or co-workers to pick up litter left over from Winter.

Once you have registered, you will be assigned a clean up area. Supplies will be provided and can be picked up at Family & Community Support Services (FCSS) located on the lower level of the Civic Centre.

MPs grill 'incompetent' health agency on fired National Microbiology Lab scientists

Federal officials in charge of the National Microbiology Lab defended security protocols at the Winnipeg institution against accusations from MPs of bureaucratic incompetence Friday. 

"We acted as expeditiously as we could, given the information that was available," Public Health Agency of Canada head Heather Jeffrey said Friday.

There's a growing optimism in the pork industry


The last few years have been challenging for the pork sector with higher interest rates, lower hog prices, global instability cutting into export demand, and higher feed prices. 

The General Manager for Manitoba Pork Cam Dahl says we are coming through that, adding that things are looking up for the pork industry.

"We're seeing support for demand, we are seeing a reduction in input costs. So things are looking much better now, than they were a couple of years ago."

Red Deer RCMP locate stolen vehicle, make one arrest

The Red Deer RCMP located a stolen vehicle leading to the arrest of one individual.

On March 31, the Red Deer RCMP were conducting proactive patrols when they observed a vehicle that had been reported as stolen earlier that morning.

Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled the scene. The vehicle was located later that night, abandoned, near a residence in Red Deer.

Red Deer RCMP Police Dog Services assisted in trying to locate the suspect. Members were able to identify the suspect and they were arrested without incident.

Red Deer County issues fire restriction order   

Due to dry conditions, a fire restriction is now in effect for Red Deer County.  

The restriction came into effect on April 19 at 11 a.m.  

During the fire restriction, all new outdoor fires within the boundaries of Red Deer County are prohibited, and no new fire permits will be issued.

City recognizes Lacombe volunteers

The Lacombe and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) the City of Lacombe, and community partners celebrated volunteers in the community during the Volunteer of the Year Awards on April 18.  

The awards were a night dedicated to honouring individuals who have served as the heartbeat of the community and recognizing the contributions they have made.

Highway 20 and Memorial Trail roundabout construction starting soon

Construction on the roundabout at the intersection of Highway 20 and Memorial Trail, is beginning soon. When phase 1 begins, the intersection will become a right in right out only.

This change along with detours is tentatively scheduled for May 6. Please plan for alternate routes.

Temporary closure at Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care today

Due to a gap in physician coverage, the Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (SLAACS) will be temporarily closed today (April 19) from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Normal business hours will resume today at 3 p.m.

Patients arriving at the Sylvan Lake Community Health Centre to receive care from SLAACS during a closure will be redirected to other available care options as appropriate to their needs.

Proposed land annexation to strengthen Bentley’s long-term viability

The Town of Bentley held a public meeting regarding the proposed annexation of land from Lacombe County on April 18.  

The land is part of the Southeast Bentley Area Structure Plan (ASP), which provides for commercial and industrial development on about 200 acres of privately owned land adjacent to the town.   

The annexation proposal is for the land covered by the ASP to be removed from Lacombe County and included in the town.
