Governments of Canada and Manitoba announce research and innovation funding to support crop health projects

The governments of Canada and Manitoba have teamed up to announce joint funding to support crop health in the province.

In a press release, the two levels of government indicated that they are providing $4.7 million in grant funding under the Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership (Sustainable CAP). Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn says the money will support 36 projects, including several that benefit the future of crop health in Manitoba, under the Research and Innovation Program over the next three years.

Alberta bans U.S. alcohol, rules out oil tax in response to tariffs

Alberta is banning new purchases of U.S. alcohol but will not cut off or tax existing oil exports to the United States, saying such a move would harm Canada more than the U.S.

Premier Danielle Smith announced the measures Wednesday in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, while also outlining Alberta’s plan to double oil production and shift focus toward global energy markets instead of prioritizing U.S. exports.

Trump grants tariff exemption at request of Big Three automakers in North America

U.S. President Donald Trump says he's granted a one-month tariff exemption for any vehicles coming through the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says the Big Three automakers — Stellantis, Ford and General Motors — asked for an exemption to the tariffs when they spoke to Trump.

Leavitt says reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect April 2 but the president is granting a month-long exemption so those automakers are not placed "at an economic disadvantage."

RCMP hosting Town Hall for Mountain View County residents

Alberta RCMP members from Olds, Didsbury and Sundre will be hosting a Town Hall meeting for Mountain View County residents on Wednesday, March 5.

The event will take place at the Harmattan Community Hall (RR40 and Township Road 324) starting at 7 p.m.

The informal meeting is an opportunity for the public to chat with RCMP members about upcoming policing priorities, local crime stats and trends, crime reduction strategies, and body-worn cameras. 

NCHL releases finals schedule; Lacombe to host Game 1 Saturday

The Lacombe Generals' quest for their third straight Vanberg Cup starts Saturday at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex in Lacombe.

Puck drop for the Game 1 between Lacombe and Innisfail goes at 8:15 p.m.

The two teams will play again March 15 in Innisfail with a game time of 7:30 p.m.

The Generals swept Stony Plain in three straight games to advance to the finals, while Innisfail bounced Wetaskiwin in four games.

Ottawa moves to block 'predatory' investments as tariff war continues

Canada's industry minister is looking to block what he calls "predatory investment behaviour" as a trade war with the United States continues.

François-Philippe Champagne warned Wednesday that Canadian businesses could be at risk due to the sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

"As a result of the rapidly shifting trade environment, some Canadian businesses could see their valuations decline, making them susceptible to opportunistic or predatory investment behaviour by non-Canadians," he said in a statement posted to the social media platform X.

Red Deer to benefit from infrastructure investments in Budget 2025

The city manager for Red Deer says Budget 2025 was "quite positive" for Red Deer and Central Alberta, providing a lot of investment into infrastructure in addition to restoring grants in lieu of taxes.

Last week's budget included $557 million over three years for the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre expansion and $22 million over three years for an interim cardiac catheterization lab.

Olds High School students celebrate Black History Month

École Olds High School students and the community celebrated Canada’s Black History Month by learning more about the past and its impact on people today. The school invited guest speaker Omari Newton, and the organization he represents - Overture with the Arts - to speak with several student groups, as well as at a community event.

Newton, who is also a professor at the Vancouver Film School, spoke to Grade 9 students about Black history in Canada, and about neighborhoods and people with Black roots.
