The 24th Annual North American Pony Chuckwagon Tarp Auction is set for April 25, 2025 at Westerner Park.

This event is a key part of kicking off Westerner Days and offers businesses a unique opportunity to gain exposure while supporting the North American Pony Chuckwagon & Chariot Races.

Top drivers from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia will compete for over $30,000 in prize money at the event. 

Generals advance to second round with sweep over Westlock

The Lacombe Generals have advanced to the second round of the NCHL playoffs after sweeping the Westlock Warriors in three straight games.

The Generals won game three of the best-of-five series Friday night by a score of 8-2 in front of 200 fans at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex in Lacombe.

Specials teams was a big factor in the game with Lacombe capitalizing on four of their six power play opportunities.

Blair Boulerice and Taylor Mulder each had a pair of goals for the home side.

The Generals outshot Westlock 40-23 on the night.

Bail scam targeting Wetaskiwin residents

The Wetaskiwin RCMP is alerting the public about a rising bail scam targeting individuals in the Wetaskiwin area.    

Scammers are impersonating law enforcement officials, attorneys, or family members, claiming that a loved one has been arrested and urgently needs bail money, often requesting cash, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.  

Rebels snap nine-game losing streak against Edmonton with Valentine's Day win

The Red Deer Rebels earned a hard fought 3-1 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings Friday night at the Centrium.

With the win, the Rebels ended a nine-game losing streak versus Edmonton dating back to January 2024.

Gavin Hodnett netted the Oil Kings only goal of the game on the power play in the first period to open up the scoring.

It would be all Red Deer starting in the second, with Doogan Pederson going end -to-end and beating Edmonton netminder Alex Worthington bar-down to get the Rebels on the board.

Alberta cabinet minister calls for health minister to be removed amid scandal

Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange is facing a renewed call to step down over allegations of high-level corruption in health contracts -- but this time the call is coming from one of her own cabinet colleagues.

Infrastructure Minister Peter Guthrie, in a memo obtained and reported on Friday by the CBC, says LaGrange and the top civil servant in health, Andre Tremblay, should be moved to other jobs while the scandal is investigated.

Red Deer parking ban in effect

Red Deer city crews will be spot clearing around schools and a number of Green Routes throughout the city from February 14 to 22.

Streets that are being cleared will be identified clearly with red No Parking signs. 

Residents are reminded that a 24-hour parking ban will be in effect on streets where No Parking signs are present. 

Cews will place No Parking signage a minimum of 12 hours in advance of operations to ensure residents have sufficient time to move their vehicles.

Senators say Canada's flag is a symbol of national pride, growth

A group of Canadian senators is sharing views on the country's flag, with some calling it a symbol of pride and togetherness, and others saying it represents Canada's growth.

The report released this week is the result of an "inquiry" on the meaning of the Canadian flag launched by Sen. Andrew Cardozo a year ago. 

Canada is marking the 60th anniversary of the national flag, adopted in 1965 with its iconic red Maple Leaf under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Cardozo says it's important that Canadians are proud of the flag.

Sylvan Lake welcomes new CAO

The Town of Sylvan Lake is welcoming a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) after an extensive search.

Dawn Phillips has accepted the role as CAO for the town and will begin her time in Sylvan Lake on April 1.

She is currently the CAO for the Town of Smoky Lake in Northern Alberta.

“I am very excited for my move to Sylvan Lake. I am passionate about municipal government and community and am very much looking forward to becoming a part of the team at the Town of Sylvan Lake,Phillips said. 

Update: RDP suspending five programs due to $10 million budget deficit

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is facing a $10 million deficit for its 2025/2026 budget (fiscal year ending June 30, 2026) due to the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) impacts to international student enrolments, along with rising inflation and an anticipated zero per cent increase to the post-secondary institution’s base grant funding from the Government of Alberta.

As a result, RDP will be looking at making structural changes.
