Sylvan Lake RCMP investigate theft of large carving “Moose on the Loose”

On Jan 3. 2024, Sylvan Lake RCMP received a report of a theft of a large moose carving from a resident's front yard on Lakeshore drive in Sylvan Lake.

This one-of-a-kind custom carving is valued at thousands of dollars and is of significant importance to the owner. The carving is known as a “Moose on the Loose”, it is just over five feet tall and is very unique.

RCMP wish to return this loose moose back to its owner.

Warmer weather is helping the railways recover

The return to warmer weather is helping the railways clear some of the backlog after the slowdown in grain movement during the recent cold snap.

Elizabeth Hucker, CPKC's assistant vice president of sales and marketing for bulk says that extreme cold dipped as far as Louisiana, and covered much of CPKC's network. 

She says operations slowed due to the cold, but thanks to their experienced crews they were able to keep things moving.

Innisfail RCMP arrest 4 after a series of thefts

Between Jan. 8, 2024, and Jan. 20, 2024, Innisfail RCMP responded to several break and enters in Innisfail including a garage, travel trailer and truck where numerous tools were stolen. Based on information obtained, investigators believed that the crimes were linked.  On Jan. 26,2024, Innisfail RCMP executed a search warrant at 49a Avenue in Innisfail searching for the property stolen during those crimes.

Sylvan Lake outdoor rinks closed again

The Town of Sylvan Lake announced this morning (Tuesday, January 30th) that all outdoor rinks in town will be closed due to the warm weather.

This includes the lake rinks, lake rink parking lot, and the lake access gates on Lakeshore Drive.

Rinks will stay closed until it's cold enough to re-open. Users are responsible for ice safety beyond lake rinks.

PBR Canada’s Elite Cup Series returns to Red Deer this weekend

Bull riders from across the country are returning to Red Deer for the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) Canada’s Elite Cup Series on Saturday (Feb. 3). 

For the third consecutive year, the series is launching the 2024 season with the PBR Red Deer Classic.

As deadline looms, Liberals say Canada not ready to expand assisted dying eligibility

The federal government is hitting pause on its plans to make medical assistance in dying available to people whose only medical condition is a mental illness — and Health Minister Mark Holland is offering no clues about a new timeline.

The country is not yet ready to take such a significant step, Holland acknowledged Monday, concurring with a findings of a joint parliamentary committee that released its final report earlier in the day.
