UPDATE: Murder charges laid in Sundre shooting

Charges have been laid in relation to the death of a Sundre resident that occurred on Thursday, Jan. 25th, 2024.

On January 25, 2024, Sundre RCMP responded to a report of a man that had been shot at a residence northeast of Sundre in Mountain View County. The victim, now identified as 36-year-old Justin Goodhand, was pronounced deceased at hospital a short time later. An autopsy was completed on January 26, 2024 which determined that the  death was a homicide.

Tragedy strikes a back country skier in Banff National Park

On Friday afternoon, Jan. 26, a back country skier fell to his death while climbing Temple Mountain in Banff National Park.

Lake Louise RCMP were called at 4:35 p.m. and Parks Canada visitor safety and emergency crews then headed to the scene.

Once they arrived, they found a deceased adult male who the RCMP report as looking like he fell while climbing the Aemmer Coulier.

The skier has been identified as a 32-year-old man from Saskatchewan. His name has not been released but next of kin have been notified.

Rebel's win-streak at eight games

The Red Deer Rebels have now won 8 games in-a-row.

Their streak continued Friday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium as they beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 6-3. It looked like it may have been in danger at the start of the game as the visiting team outshot Red Deer 10-5 and were winning 1-0 after one.

Then the Rebels woke up. Kalan Lind got the home team on the board at the 2:40 mark of the second to kick off a 6-goal second period. Frantisek Formanek, Matteo Fabrizi, Mats Lindgren, and Hunter Mayo (who would score twice) all added to the Rebels tally.

Red Deer High-Risk Youth Coalition Rebrands

The Red Deer High-Risk Youth Coalition has rebranded to The Red Deer Coalition for Youth, and is hoping for support to continue work in Red Deer. 

The Red Deer Coalition for Youth first began when a group of community members from many organizations and systems chose to work collaboratively to better meet the needs of vulnerable youth in the community.  

Alberta's " CrossRoads" event opens Monday

The event formerly known as FarmTech is a collaboration of the Alberta Canola, Alberta Grains, and Alberta Pulse Commissions.

Committee Chair Todd Hames says this year's event focuses on "New Ideas and Directions" with presentations on innovation and sustainability, agriculture policy and farm management.

"We're trying to create that environment to have speakers, that encourage conversation and ideas. Then have opportunities during the program to network and share those ideas and thoughts and have the discussion."

Province expands 2023 Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance Program


The province is opening up the 2023 Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance initiative to more producers. 

Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson says they have expanded the program to include 23 new regions.

“I’m pleased Alberta’s government was able to work with the federal government to expand this financial support to additional regions impacted by severe drought and extreme heat conditions. I will continue to look out for the interests of our hard-working livestock producers.”

UPDATE: AJHL seeks clarity on conflicting statements (Five AJHL teams disappointed by game cancellations)

Update: 

In response to the update from the five teams, the AJHL has issued the following statement this morning (January 26, 2024). 

"The AJHL is aware of the contradictory statements coming from the BCHL and five defecting clubs, and the negative impact they are having on our players and families.
