At of 8:40PM on Saturday, January 13th, the grid alert ended. Due to continuing cold temperatures, Albertans are being asked to reduce their usage during peak hours from 4PM to 7PM.

At 6:44 pm Saturday, January 13th, The Alberta Emergency Management Agency issued a critical civil Emergency.

Extreme cold resulting in high power demand has placed the Alberta grid at a high risk of rotating power outages this evening.

UPDATE: Maskwacis RCMP investigate fatal hit and run

Jan. 7, 2024, at approximately 6:52 p.m., Maskwacis RCMP responded to a report of a hit and run involving a pedestrian. This occurred north of the intersection of Powerline Road and Highway 611 west. Upon arrival, a 24-year-old woman was located deceased.

Maskwacis RCMP can report that the vehicle involved in this fatality has been located and the driver and passengers of the vehicle were positively identified.

Extreme cold warning continues, could see warmer temps on Tuesday

Environment Canada has extended the extreme cold warning issued for all parts of Central Alberta.

A long period of extremely cold temperatures and wind chills continues. This morning and Sunday morning will be the coldest, with temperatures ranging from -40 to -50, and wind chill values near -55.

Wind chills could even be a bit colder in open and exposed areas. Patches of dense ice fog are occurring, especially near communities, and could last until the afternoon.

Canadians helped plan U.S., U.K. attacks on Houthis in Yemen: Defence Department

Canadian Armed Forces members provided planning support for the U.S.-led attack on Houthi positions in Yemen, but the Defence Department said Friday that no Canadian assets were involved. 

The U.S. said they and the U.K. attacked more than 60 targets at 16 sites used by the Iran-backed group in Yemen on Thursday to demonstrate that the allies will not tolerate the group’s attacks on ships in the Red Sea. 

'Our family has fallen apart': Sentencing for man who ran over Saskatchewan Mountie

Melanie Patton says the loss of her only son, a Saskatchewan Mountie who was run over and killed more than two years ago, has left a void that can’t be filled. 

She told a sentencing hearing Thursday that she has lost all joy.

"Nothing is the same. Our family has fallen apart," the mother told the judge in her victim impact statement. 

“Gatherings are small and quiet, and I dread the holidays.”

Cattle can handle the cold, but extra attention is needed with the bitter cold temperatures

Cattle can handle fairly cold temperatures, but extra measures are needed when the temperature hits -20 or colder.

Jordan Johnson, a livestock and feed extension specialist, says animals start preparing for the cold through a process called 'photoperiod sensitivity'.

Water leaks affecting traffic in Red Deer

The City is advising residents that extreme cold temperatures are causing some issues with water lines in the city.

There is a water leak on Westpark Crescent that is causing runoff on 57 Avenue and 43 Street. This runoff is causing icy road conditions on the 43 Street hill. Crews are on-scene working to repair the leak. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible and, if you must be in the area, use extreme caution, obey signs, and give crews room to maneuver.
