ADVERTISING/PUBLIC NOTIFICATION BYLAW

Council approved first reading of Bylaw No. 1433/25, the Advertising/Public Notification Bylaw. The proposed amendments aim to expand alternative advertising methods to enhance public awareness. A public hearing is scheduled for April 24, 2025, commencing at 9:00 a.m. in the Lacombe County Council Chambers.

Three measles cases in Central Alberta

Alberta Health Services is reporting three confirmed cases of measles in Central Alberta and a total of 21 across the province as of Friday afternoon.

The northern region has the highest number of cases with nine. Edmonton is reporting four cases, Calgary has two, and there are three cases in the south.

All but one of the cases are in children under 18 years of age.

The best protection against measles is to ensure you are up to date with your immunizations.

Wranglers look to ride playoff success into provincial tournament

After capturing the HJHL Championship last week, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers will be competing in the Alberta Junior B Provincial tournament in Morinville.

For the Wranglers, it was their first HJHL title since 2010 and first championship since moving to Sylvan Lake. Sylvan Lake only lost one game during their playoff run.

The Town of Drumheller has moved to engage with the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce and Travel Drumheller to explore options for the future of the World’s Largest Dinosaur (WLD), known locally as Tyra, after the Chamber’s announcement that the iconic landmark will be decommissioned in December 2029.

During a special council meeting on Thursday, March 27, 2025, the council unanimously passed a motion to engage key stakeholders to determine one-, three-, and five-year plans that could secure Tyra’s future.

'Still very dire': Canadian Red Cross is fundraising following Myanmar earthquake

A representative for the Canadian Red Cross says the situation on the ground in Myanmar is "still very dire and tragic" days after a massive earthquake that has killed more than 1,700 people.

Canadian Red Cross operations lead Chiran Livera said teams of staff and volunteers made up of both international and local Red Cross workers were in Myanmar when the quake hit on Friday, and they have been able to distribute help, including water and shelter kits, from warehouses stationed around the country.

Recent snow not enough to lift water shortage advisories

In spite of recent snowfall and rain across Central Alberta, some rivers and streams are still under a water shortage advisory.

This advisory is still in effect for the Little Red Deer River, Medicine River, Blindman River, and parts of the Red Deer River below Red Deer-Buffalo Lake.

A water shortage advisory is issued when, stream flows and/or lake and/or reservoir levels are lower than normal, and are either approaching or are currently below key water management thresholds.

Expect some traffic delays in Red Deer starting Monday

It is scheduled to be completed by 3 pm on Tuesday.
