Ponoka RCMP investigating fight between dog owners

The following report detailing events from Dec. 21 to Jan. 21 was issued by Ponoka RCMP:

December 21, 2024 - Ponoka RCMP responded to a report of a male laying in the ditch of highway 2A just north of Ponoka. Members made extensive patrols but were unable to locate anyone.

December 25, 2024 – Members attended a local apartment building following a report of a female passed out in the stairwell. The unknown female was then seen walking away, patrols were made but were unsuccessful.

Update: Police on scene of serious motor vehicle collision near Rimbey

Update:

At 4:22 p.m., the Rimbey RCMP advised that Highway 53 between Range Road 30 and 32 reopened. 

RCMP said the collision was fatal.

An update with the circumstances leading to the collision is expected.

The Rimbey RCMP were on the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 53 between Range Road 30 and 32.

Traffic was redirected in all directions while emergency workers responded.

RCMP said that road conditions in Central Alberta were poor in some areas.

RDPS provides update on PowerSchool data breach

Red Deer Public Schools has provided parents with an update on the PowerSchool data breach that took place in December. A letter was sent out to parents this week.

On January 8, 2025, families were made aware of a PowerSchool data breach, which was identified on December 28, 2024. PowerSchool acted immediately to secure the affected data and mitigate any ongoing risks. This breach was widespread, impacting PowerSchool clients across Canada, the United States, and other parts of the world.

Bulldogs announce date for game postponed due to weather

The Blackfalds Bulldogs have announced that the game originally scheduled for Nov. 23 against the Okotoks Oilers has been rescheduled to March 12 at 7 p.m. at Eagle Builders Centre.

The game was postponed due to inclement weather.

All tickets purchased in advance for the original Nov. 23 game will be applied to this new date.

The Bulldogs return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 25 at home against Penticton. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. 

 

Town and County of Stettler continuing physician recruitment efforts

The Town and County of Stettler are continuing to advocate for residents to receive health care close to home.  

Recruitment efforts include financial incentives for doctors, and events with organizations including Stettler Needs Doctors and the Health Professional Attraction and Retention Committee.  

Bulldogs sign forward with NCAA Division I commitment

The Blackfalds Bulldogs have announced the signing of 2007-born forward, Daniel Hussa.

The North Wales, Pennsylvania product played for the New Jersey Rockets 18U AAA team. 

In 54 games with the Rockets this season, Hussa scored 33 goals and 61 points. 

The six-foot-four, 192-pound forward has an NCAA Division I commitment to the University of Vermont.

Rural cancer patients to benefit from $1.5 million Alberta investment

Alberta’s government is investing $1.5 million to expand cancer support services for patients and caregivers in rural and remote areas. The funding will support Wellspring Alberta, which provides emotional and mental health support, including counselling, peer services, and caregiver assistance.

These services help cancer patients navigate physical and cognitive challenges caused by treatment, complementing traditional medical care.

Alberta RCMP issue Canada-wide warrant for man facing child sex charges

Alberta RCMP have issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for 45-year-old Justin Radcliffe, who is facing several child sex charges.

Radcliffe is known to frequent Grande Prairie, in addition to Kelowna and Falkland, B.C.

On July 17, 2022 Grande Prairie RCMP received a report of a suspect sexually assaulting an underage minor and publishing the images. 

Police arrested and charged Radcliffe with:

New driver charged following rear-end collision near Sylvan Lake

Update x 2:

RCMP say the collision involved two vehicles with one vehicle rear-ending the other. 

There were no injuries.

One vehicle was towed.

One of the drivers was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for driving with a Class 7 learner's license without a supervisor.

Update:

The scene was cleared around 8:45 a.m. Traffic is back to normal.

Emergency crews were on the scene of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 eastbound near Range Road 11.

High-speed internet coming to Clearwater County

Clearwater County’s Broadband Internet project is underway, which will bring reliable high-speed internet to the area.

The county says fibre-optic internet is future-proof and will meet the demands of a modern society while reducing the digital divide for Clearwater County residents.

The project is funded through the Universal Broadband Fund, a Canadian federal initiative with additional support from the Alberta provincial government.
