RCMP searching for man with ties to Central Alberta

Alberta RCMP are continuing to search for Jeral Maurice Rabbit, who was highlighted in this week's Wanted Wednesday social media post.

Rabbit's last known location was Maskwacis, however, he is also known to frequent Ponoka and Wetaskiwin.

If you spot Rabbit, do not approach. He is wanted for various crimes.

Home sales up, inventory down to start the year for Red Deer's real estate market

Red Deer's real estate market is off to a hot start in 2025 with detached single-family home sales up 21 per cent compared to last year.

According to the Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA), there were 63 detached home sales in January 2025 and a total of 96 sales of all kinds, which was up seven per cent from 2024.

The average price for a detached single-family home last month was $461,252, an increase of 12 per cent from last year.

There were 155 new listings in January, with total inventory sitting at 178. That number is down 20 per cent from 2024.

RDP curling teams celebrate an award-winning weekend

It was a medal winning weekend for the RDP Kings and Queens curling teams.

Kaylee Raniseth, the 2024/2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Female Curler of the Year, helped to lead the RDP Queens to gold at the ACAC Curling Championships hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic.

NIck Woznesensksy made an impact on the ice for the RDP Kings, helping his squad earn ACAC silver. Both the Kings and Queens will compete at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada College Championships held February 24-28 in Lethbridge.

Red Deer shelter struggling to provide warmth on coldest nights

Red Deer's homeless population has been struggling to keep warm during the recent cold snap.

Central Alberta has seen windchill values around minus 40 over the past week and that can lead to frostbite occurring within minutes on uncovered skin.

Dwayne Kraushar is the manager of the Mustard Seed homeless shelter in Red Deer.

He says they'd like to help keep people warm, however most of their beds have been full for the past year.

Fun events planned for Family Day in Ponoka

Family Day on Monday, February 17 in the Town of Ponoka will be filled with many free activities the whole family can enjoy, including a Skijoring event at the Calnash Ag Event Centre, swimming, skating, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and taking a stroll in the Battle River Valley.

Public warned of scam targeting shoppers, after business closure announcement

Peavey Mart is warning customers of a circulating online scam.

The retailer posted on social media to be aware of fake Peavey Mart websites and social media accounts. 

Adding, that the retailer is not accepting orders, liquidation sales are in-store only, and customers will never be asked for credit card payments online or over the phone. 

The Red Deer RCMP have been notified of the fraudulent websites and social pages posing as the business, that claim to offer an online store to purchase items.

Rebels ride hot start to victory over Pats

The Red Deer Rebels scored three goals in the first period en route to a 4-1 win over the visiting Regina Pats Tuesday night at the Centrium.

The Rebels have won four of their last five games and have beat the Pats twice in the past 11 days.

Beckett Hamilton opened the scoring for the home side midway through the first taking a pass from Jhett Larson and beating Regina netminder Kelton Pyne.

Red Deer would go up 2-0 minutes later when Ty Coupland fired home a shot from the point on the power play.

Over the past week, the Didsbury Fire Department had the opportunity at an interesting type of training in a different way than usual.

Raphael Buergi, a lieutenant with the fire department explained what the opportunity is all about and how it happened.

"With the ice surface no longer in place at the Didsbury Memorial Complex due to some issues, the town asked if the fire department would like to use it for training as nobody else was."
