Bulldogs sign 2007-born defenceman for 2025-26 season
The Blackfalds Bulldogs have announced that 2007-born defenceman, Jackson Accardi, has committed to the team for the 2025-2026 BCHL season.
The Yardley, Pennsylvania product played for Council Rock High North (USHS-PA) as well as the New Jersey Rockets 18U AAA team.
In 10 games with Council Rock High North, Accardi had 23 goals and 38 points.
“I am extremely excited to get started with the Bulldogs," said Accardi. "They have an amazing set up with the staff, facilities, and great people on the team. I am looking forward to what’s to come.”
Alberta's Smith lauds pause on U.S. tariffs, deal to create fentanyl czar
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she's "greatly heartened" by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff pause, saying the eleventh-hour deal with Canada follows through on a border security measure she had been calling for.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said late Monday the tariffs will be paused for "at least 30 days" while Canada appoints a "fentanyl czar" and works with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
Area highways snow covered; visibility limited in some areas

Central Alberta can expect periods of light snow today with a high of 23. The wind chill will be minus 36 this morning and minus 31 this afternoon. There is a risk of frostbite.
Despite tariff pause, uncertainty hangs over Canadian economy
Uncertainty still hangs over the Canadian economy despite U.S. President Donald Trump announcing a 30-day pause in tariffs that were to take effect today.
The temporary reprieve halts — at least for now — a continental trade war that economists on both sides of the border warned would raise prices.
Trump's decision meant Canada and the provinces also halted their moves to retaliate including with tariffs and bans on U.S. alcohol sales north of the border.
Keystone Agricultural Producers set to Address Key Issues at 2025 AGM
It’s annual general meeting time for the Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) and president Jill Verwey from the Portage area says there is plenty to cover. The AGM is happening today, February 4th, at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg.
Verwey noted that, overall, Manitoba producers experienced a productive year in 2024. However, she highlighted concerns regarding crop pricing and the logistics of shipping grain.
"It's been a tight fall and going into spring there several challenges faced by farmers.”
Premier Danielle Smith responds to U.S. tariff delay
Premier Danielle Smith issued the following statement upon the announcement of a 30-day pause on tariffs on Canadian goods:
“I am greatly heartened to see that U.S. President Donald Trump and the Government of Canada have agreed to a plan to crack down on fentanyl trafficking and other illegal activities at our shared border.
Update: Lacombe emergency crews respond to collision Monday afternoon
Lacombe emergency crews, including the Lacombe Police Service and the Lacombe Fire Department, responded to a collision Monday afternoon involving two vehicles.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of 51 Ave. and 50 St.
Lacombe Police say one of the vehicles made an unsafe turn out of a local business.
No injuries were reported.
One person was charged for making an unsafe turn.
Trudeau says U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused for 30 days
U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed not to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico for another month, pulling back from a plan that would have tipped North America into a trade war on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Trump twice on Monday, their first discussions since the president took over the White House on Jan. 20. After what Trudeau described on social media as a "good call" in the afternoon, the two leaders agreed to pause tariffs for at least 30 days.
Lacombe turns pink for Kindness Campaign
The Lacombe and District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and local dignitaries kicked off the annual Kindness Campaign today (Feb. 3) with an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.
The community-wide campaign is designed to build relationships and foster a sense of community while bringing residents together to celebrate acts of kindness.
Trump wrong, U.S. banks can and do operate in Canada, association and professor say
The association representing bankers in Canada says U.S. subsidiaries and branches represent half of all foreign bank assets in the country, despite false claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that American banks can't do business north of the border.
"There are 16 U.S. based bank subsidiaries and branches with around C$113 billion in assets currently operating in Canada," the Canadian Bankers Association said in a statement Monday.
