Opposition parties call for Parliament's return after Trump hits pause on tariffs
The federal Conservatives and New Democrats say the government needs to recall Parliament within the next month to act on U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threat.
On Monday, Trump agreed not to impose punishing tariffs on Canadian imports until March 4 after striking a deal with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over two phone calls.
Trudeau says he presented Trump with the federal government's plan to secure the border and tackle fentanyl production and trafficking.
Stolen vehicles recovered following police chase, three facing charges
On Jan. 22, the Drayton Valley RCMP responded to a report of a stolen vehicle.
Surveillance was obtained from a local business and was relayed to the Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (CAD CRU).
Members of the CAD CRU were assisting the Rimbey RCMP and observed what they believed to be the same vehicle, along with a second stolen vehicle, in Clearwater County, near Alder Flats.

Red Deer District Chamber opposes U.S. tariffs
The Red Deer District Chamber says it strongly opposes the U.S. government’s recently announced tariffs of 25 per cent on Canadian goods and 10 per cent on Canadian energy exports.
The Chamber says the tariffs, originally set to take effect on Tuesday but have been delayed for 30 days, pose a significant threat to businesses across Central Alberta, disrupting supply chains, increasing costs, and limiting market access for exporters.
Lacombe pool closure scheduled for Tues/Wed
The Teach Pool at Lacombe's Kinsmen Aquatic Centre will be closed for maintenance from Tuesday, February 4, at 6:30 p.m. to Wednesday, February 5, at 11:00 a.m.
Staff will be completing essential filter work.

Mixed results for RDP King's and Queens teams
It was an up and down week for RDP King's and Queen's teams.
This past week, the Kings and Queens Basketball teams dropped their games to the SAIT Trojans. The RDP Queens Hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks twice. The Kings Hockey team earned two victories.
The Queens Volleyball team came up short against the Trojans. The Kings Volleyball squad solidified a pair of wins over the SAIT Trojans.

Long-time Red Deer City Councillor Lawrence Lee has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Red Deer.
Lee made the announcement on Jan. 31, 2025.
“I’m excited to share my passion and I am ready to start the next chapter of our community’s growth.” said Lee, at a media conference on Friday.
Lee says his primary focus will be to make Red Deer communities safer. He also aims to help make life more affordable for Red Deerians and is looking forward to helping the local economy thrive again.
Red Deer mayor says 'dependence on the United States has to change'
Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston is sharing his thoughts on the potential tariffs that have now been postponed 30 days.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced late Monday the tariffs will be paused for "at least 30 days" while Canada appoints a "fentanyl czar" and works with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
Duties of 10 per cent on energy and 25 per cent on all other Canadian goods were scheduled to go into effect Tuesday.
Bulldogs sign 2007-born defenceman for 2025-26 season
The Blackfalds Bulldogs have announced that 2007-born defenceman, Jackson Accardi, has committed to the team for the 2025-2026 BCHL season.
The Yardley, Pennsylvania product played for Council Rock High North (USHS-PA) as well as the New Jersey Rockets 18U AAA team.
In 10 games with Council Rock High North, Accardi had 23 goals and 38 points.
“I am extremely excited to get started with the Bulldogs," said Accardi. "They have an amazing set up with the staff, facilities, and great people on the team. I am looking forward to what’s to come.”
