1 - A New Brunswick woman who lost two military sons to PTSD says she's honoured to be named this year's National Silver Cross Mother. Seventy-eight-year-old Maureen Anderson says she hopes to use her time in the role, on behalf of mothers who have lost a child to active military duty, to keep speaking about post-traumatic stress disorder and to encourage veterans to get all the help they can. 

Update: Shelter in place lifted for area within County of Wetaskiwin

The Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of an assault at a rural home on Township Road 441 in Wetaskiwin County.

After attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful, RCMP contained the residence and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist.

A warrant was obtained to enter the home and arrest the suspect. 

When entering the home, officers were shot at by the suspect.

Police continued efforts to de-escalate the situation. 

Chinese-Russian air co-operation has Norad’s "full attention"

The head of the North American Aerospace Defence Command says Chinese and Russian air co-operation in the Arctic has Norad's "full attention."

Those two countries for the first time staged a joint patrol in the Arctic near the coast of Alaska last July.

U.S. Gen. Gregory Guillot told The Canadian Press in a year interview that it potentially takes decades for two nations’ militaries to reach "full integration" at a level like the U.S. and Canada.

- Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday. It is the first time an American president has lived a full century. The Democrat served as president from 1977 to 1981 and then worked for over four decades leading The Carter Center, a non-governmental organization he and his wife co-founded in 1982. Rosalynn Carter died last year at age 96, and the former president has been in home hospice care for 19 months in his hometown of Plains, Ga. 

Federal government plans to extend deadline for charitable donation tax deductions

The federal government plans to extend the deadline for claiming charitable donations on tax returns through to the end of February.

The announcement from Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc comes nearly a week after the premiers called on Justin Trudeau's government to make the move.

A statement from LeBlanc's office says the extension will help ease the effects of the four-week Canada Post strike.

'We need new leadership': Atlantic Liberal caucus calls for Trudeau's resignation

The Atlantic Liberal caucus is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign as party leader in a letter expressing "deep concern" about the future of government. 

The letter dated Dec. 23 was shared publicly Sunday by New Brunswick MP Wayne Long, who has been saying since the fall that Trudeau should step down.

Long wrote in a Facebook post that he shared the letter for "openness and transparency."
