Grade 1 students meet nature photographer  

Red Deer Public Schools (RDPS) Grade 1 students at the G.H. Dawe School have combined their love for animals, science, art, and conservation in a project inspired by Canada’s wildlife.  

“Our Grade 1 class loves animals,” said Kathleen Erickson, Grade 1 Teacher at G.H. Dawe School. “It started with a love of birds. We have a tree right outside our classroom window, and we’ve watched the blue jays through the seasons.”  

Holiday shopping alert: 12 scams to avoid

With the Christmas season in full swing, buying Christmas presents and last-minute shopping is in full swing.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) wants to remind Airdronians to be safe when shopping online, as 12 scams stick out during the holiday season.

Wes Lafortune, Media Relations Coordinator for the BBB serving Alberta and East Kootenay talked about the importance of being aware when it comes to different scams.

New Clive School playground opens to students

Students at Clive School are enjoying a brand-new playground, the result of a community-wide effort that spanned two years.

The project began in 2022 when the school council identified the need to replace the aging playground.

Facing a fundraising goal of approximately $300,000, the council applied for grants and reached out to local businesses and organizations for support.

Officers cleared from fatal 2021 shooting near Rocky Mountain House: ASIRT 

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has completed an investigation into an officer-involved shooting near Rocky Mountain House in 2021.  

The fatal shooting happened during the investigation of a carjacking from the day before.  

A 39-year-old male was identified as a suspect, who was also believed to have been involved in a homicide in Edmonton.   

Family says man received MAID on psychiatric day pass, files wrongful-death lawsuit

The family of a 52-year-old man who received medical assistance in dying while on a day pass from a Vancouver psychiatric hospital has launched a constitutional challenge to the procedure's legal framework.

The notice of civil claim filed Friday at the B.C. Supreme Court says the businessman and father of three, who suffered chronic back pain and long-term mental illness, suffered wrongful death in December 2022.

It accuses Dr. Ellen Wiebe and her clinic of malpractice, though none of the allegations have been proven in court.

FCC supports 4-H Canada with their FCC 4-H Club Fund

Farm Credit Canada or FCC have announced the recipients of their 2024 FCC 4-H Club Fund. This fund helps provide 4-H clubs across Canada with money to use in their operations. The FCC Club Fund has been in operation since 2013 and has given out over $1 million to over 2100 4-H clubs across Canada. Hugh Maynard is the interim CEO with 4-H Canada, who understands the impact this funding can have. 

Over 70 dogs surrendered from Brazeau County property; owner charged with animal cruelty

On Nov. 15, the Drayton Valley RCMP were dispatched to assist Alberta SPCA Peace Officers conduct a property check to ensure a landowner in Brazeau County was following conditions of a court-issued prohibition order.   

The property owner was arrested for obstruction and assaulting a police officer.   

A check of the property revealed that he was in possession of more livestock than his court order allowed.   

Ponoka RCMP respond to break and enter on Stampede Grounds

The Ponoka RCMP has issued a report on some of the calls received between Nov. 23 and Dec. 15.  

Here are the calls:  

Nov. 23 - The Ponoka RCMP responded to a report of an intoxicated male, wearing all black, stumbling down the middle of Highway 2A southbound near the Prairie Boys car wash. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the wanderer.
