RCMP respond to death of wildland fire employee at Jasper blaze

On Aug. 3, 2024, at 2:15 p.m., RCMP were notified of a serious injury sustained to an Alberta Wildland Fire Employee from a falling tree while fighting an active fire northeast of Jasper.

The 24-year-old male firefighter was extracted from the scene by STARS and has been declared deceased. 

The deceased was a resident of Calgary and based out of the Rocky Mountain House Fire Base.

OH&S has been notified of the death and will be investigating.

O'Chiese First Nation firearm complaint now considered a homicide

On July 30, 2024, at 11:21 a.m., Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a firearms complaint from a residence on O’Chiese First Nation. Upon arrival, emergency responders located a male with serious injuries.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the male, who has been identified as a 27-year-old Sunchild First Nation resident, was pronounced deceased. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been deployed and has taken charge of the investigation.

Provincial government taking steps to stop the spread of invasive species

The government of Alberta is reminding residents and visitors to clean, drain, and dry their water gear to ensure invasive species don’t enter the province.  

Zebra mussels and quagga mussels can be easily spread through boats and other watercraft, damage waterways and infrastructure, and destroy habitats and water quality.

The non-profit’s fourth annual Big Backyard BioBlitz aims to create a snapshot of nature in Canada, by encouraging people of all ages to observe and document the nature around them.

RD Council to consider budget request for Kinsmen Community Arenas repair ahead of Fall

During repair work at the Kinsmen Community Arenas, issues were found with the chiller, resulting in it needing to be replaced. On Tuesday, City Council will consider a budget request for $350,000 to replace the chiller.

While replacement is required for long term use, administration is looking into other interim options, including the option of renting one to allow for the ice surfaces to be available before a new chiller can be installed.

Lacombe County to host an AG Farm and ALUS tour

Lacombe County is inviting you to this year's AG Farm and ALUS tour.

The event will run August 8th and will be a day in Lacombe County exploring local farms and Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) projects.

Rocky Forest Area dealing with multiple wildfires

If you are wondering where the smoke in Central Alberta is coming from, there is a good chance it's from one of five wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House area.

One of those fires is still being classified as out of control. This fire is located approximately 5 km west of the Forestry Trunk Road (highway 734), 19 km northwest of the Ram Falls Provincial Park boundary and 30 km south of Nordegg. This fire is estimated to be 1,400 ha in size.

Town of Blackfalds issues a coyote warning

The Town of Blackfalds, Thursday, August 1st, has issued a coyote warning for hikers and pet owners. This was written on the town's Facebook page today.

"If you're taking your dogs, cats, or family out for a walk today, please be aware that there has been a family of coyotes spotted on the TCT behind Ash Close. There are pups, and the adult coyote has been reported to show signs of aggression to passersby."
