RCMP say no charges to be laid in bus crash that killed 17 seniors heading to casino

Police will not be laying charges in a bus crash that killed 17 people in western Manitoba.

RCMP say they do not expect to be able to talk to the bus driver, who was severely injured in the crash.

And they say officers have found no explanation as to why he pulled into an intersection when it wasn't safe.

The bus, carrying seniors to a casino, collided with a semi-trailer while crossing the Trans-Canada Highway near the town of Carberry last June.

Lacombe County adopts QEII West Area Structure Plan

Lacombe County Council approved the QEII West Area Structure Plan (ASP) that will guide future commercial and business industrial development. 

The plan focuses on areas west of the QEII Highway, west of Lacombe and Blackfalds.  

The plan was developed in consultation with the community and provides a framework for future industrial development while protecting agricultural lands from loss and fragmentation in the county.

Temporary closure of Stettler Hospital Emergency Department

Due to a gap in physician coverage, the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre Emergency Department will be temporarily closed from today (June 25) at 5 p.m., until June 26 at 8 a.m.  

During the temporary closure, nursing staff will remain on-site in the emergency department to provide triage and assessments to patients. 

Patients will be referred to alternative care options depending on their condition.  

Cargill Dunlop beef strike is a growing concern

Canada's beef sector would like to see an end to the labour dispute at the Cargill Dunlop facility in Guelph.

The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA), National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) and Beef Farmers of Ontario note that the beef sector relies on a resilient processing industry across the country.

Members of UFCW Local 175 walked off the job in May, and there are no signs of an immediate resolution.

The Cargill Dunlop facility is the major processing facility for Canada’s largest fed-cattle region after Alberta.

New milk concentration plant will benefit dairy producers in Western Canada

Alberta's Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program is helping to build the first state-of-the-art milk concentration plant in Canada.

Under the program, DIW Buildings & Land Corporation has qualified for conditional approval for a tax credit of about $7.6 million.

DIW Buildings & Land Corporation (Dairy Innovation West) is a collaboration between Alberta Milk, Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, SaskMilk, and the BC Dairy Association.

Red Deer Rebels announce 2024-25 schedule 

The Red Deer Rebels have announced their full 68-game schedule for the 2024-25 Western Hockey League (WHL) regular season.  

The season begins with the Rebels hosting the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sept. 21.  

All Rebels home games at the Peavey Mart Centrium begin at 7 p.m., aside from Oct. 20 when the Rebels host the Edmonton Oil Kings at 4 p.m., and Feb. 19 when the Lethbridge Hurricanes visit for the Family Day Matinee at 2 p.m.  

Red Deer council accepts community vision for city’s future

Red Deer City Council approved the 2050 vision, setting the path for the city’s future during the June 24 regular council meeting.  

The city first began the consultation process to create a community vision in 2022.  

Red Deer’s vision for 2050 is, “Red Deer is vibrant and visionary, grounded in connection and growing in diversity.”
