Lacombe Museum showcasing local Edwardian era history

The Lacombe Museums newest feature exhibition is highlighting Lacombe’s history from the Edwardian era.  

The Edwardian Era in the West exhibit covers the major changes that occurred in Western Canada at the turn of the century. 

“This exhibit has been a long time in the making. It originally started as an Edwardian fashion exhibit and it has definitely morphed and become much broader,” said Brittany Kerik, Lacombe Museum Collections Registrar and Researcher.  

The Senate Committee on Agriculture releases its new soil health study "Critical Ground"

The Senate Committee on Agriculture has released a new study on Soil Health in Canada.

The new study "Critical Ground: Why Soil is Essential to Canada's Economic, Environmental, Human and Social Health" looks at the current status of our soils and puts forward 25 recommendations for improving and maintaining our soils.

Committee Chair Senator Rob Black says one of the recommendations, and probably one of the most important ones in his mind is for the Federal Government to recognize a sense of urgency and act accordingly to protect and conserve our soils.

More focus being put on genetic evaluation in beef and dairy cattle

The Canadian Angus Association will receive over $1.6 million to improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced the funding on Friday noting that Canada's world-class cattle industry contributes significantly to our country's economy. 

"By investing in new innovations and technologies, we can enhance the industry's economic and environmental sustainability -  putting more money in the pockets of producers, and more top-quality Canadian products on tables around the world."

Some changes to a major intersection in Red Deer start this week

Drivers on 19 Street will soon experience some traffic pattern changes as contractors get set to start roundabout construction at the intersection of 19 Street and 40 Avenue.

Starting late next week, no left turns will be permitted at the intersection and traffic heading north or south on 40 Avenue will be detoured to turn right onto 19 Street as no straight-through traffic will be permitted.

Strike for Canadian border workers on hold until Wednesday: union

The union that represents 9,000 CBSA workers said Friday they won't strike until at least Wednesday, as mediation continues.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada initially said border workers were set to strike as early as 4 p.m. Friday if the two sides hadn't reached a deal.

But shortly after 4 p.m., a spokesperson for the union said negotiations would continue.

The spokesperson said later Friday that a new strike deadline would be set in the coming days and job action was still possible if an agreement couldn't be reached at the table.
