Border strike averted after union reaches tentative agreement with Ottawa

Workers at Canada's borders are no longer planning to go on strike this week after their union reached a tentative agreement with the federal government.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada said Tuesday it reached a deal with the government for Canada Border Services Agency employees after working "around the clock." 

If such an agreement couldn't be hammered out, the union had been planning for a strike of more than 9,000 members beginning 12:01 a.m. on Friday. 

Over $3.1 million in stolen farm equipment recovered

Charges have been laid against four people for their alleged involvement in a lengthy stolen property investigation. Nearly 90 stolen vehicles, trailers, farming equipment, and other machinery had previously been seized.
 
Charges were laid on May 15, 2024, bringing the nearly three-year ALERT Auto Crimes unit investigation to a close. Known as Operation Elephant, the investigation began in 2021 following tips received from the public.

Temporary closures of Ponoka Emergency Department

Due to an unexpected gap in physician coverage, the Emergency Department (ED) at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre will be temporarily closed from 5 p.m. on Monday, June 10 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, and from 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12 to 8 a.m. Thursday, June 13.

AHS is working to ensure residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time. Nursing staff will remain on-site in the ED to provide triage and assessments to patients who present to the department. Patients will be referred to alternative care options depending on their condition.

Junior Disc Golf Championship coming to Sylvan Lake

Coming up on Saturday, June 22nd there will be the 2024 Alberta Junior Disc Golf Championship.

This Professional Disc Golf Association (PGDA) sanctioned event will happen at the Sylvan Lake Disc Golf Course.

One of the coordinators of the event, Eric Matthew Anderson, says it's going to be a great tournament. 

"Some of the best disc golfing youth in Alberta will be there. Most of the kids are registered with the PDGA and get rated. Gavin Beamish, will be there and he won last year."

MacAulay takes part in World Pork Expo and meets with U.S. Agriculture officials in Iowa and Minnesota

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay met with U.S. officials last week to strengthen our relationship and share priorities on food production and security.

MacAulay travelled to Des Moines, Iowa, to take part in the World Pork Expo, and met with Iowa's Governor and Secretary of Agriculture where he highlighted the importance of the strong and secure Canada-U.S. agri-food trade relationship and reinforced Canada's role as a reliable and indispensable trading partner.

RCMP asking for help after home invasion in Caroline

On May 22, 2024, at 10:11 a.m., Rocky Mountain House RCMP were dispatched to a report of a home invasion with a firearm in the Town of Caroline.

Two men entered the victim's residence and pointed a “sawed off” shotgun at the homeowner. A physical altercation occurred, during which the homeowner was struck in the face. Both suspects fled in a newer model Grey SUV.

RCMP have obtained a Composite Sketch for the first suspect and are requesting public assistance.
