RCMP's campaign spotlights someone known to frequent the Foothills

This week's RCMP Wanted Wednesday campaign features someone known to be in the area.

Jan-Anne August is wanted by the RCMP for various crimes, and her known areas of activity include Calgary, Foothills County, Bragg Creek, Lethbridge County, Vulcan, Vulcan County, and more.

August was previously featured in a Wanted Wednesday post back in November, and she is still wanted by the police.

While her last known location is unknown, the RCMP are advising people to not approach her if she is seen.

Bank of Canada cuts its key interest rate to 2.75% as tariffs roil economy

The Bank of Canada lowered its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point on Wednesday as the tariff battle with the United States starts to weigh on the Canadian economy.

The policy rate stands at 2.75 per cent after the central bank’s seventh consecutive rate cut.

The move was widely expected by economists.

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem said in prepared remarks Wednesday that signs of stability in inflation and momentum in the Canadian economy driven by previous rate cuts are at risk amid the trade war with the U.S.

Christ the Redeemer (CTR) Catholic School Division celebrates 30 years of operation this year.

They recently celebrated during their annual Faith Days in Okotoks on February 19 and 20.

What made the occasion so special were the crucifixes blessed by Bishop William McGrattan.

The crucifixes were made using olive wood from the Holy Land, soil from Bethlehem, stone from Jerusalem and incense from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Calgary Police issue warning over man using online dating apps to victimize women

The Calgary Police have issued a warning about a man who is believed to be using online dating apps to sexually assault women under a fake identity.

It is believed a man who is identifying himself as 'Alex' has been interacting with women on online dating apps, gaining their trust, and later sexually assaulting them

In February 2024, the victim had begun to exchange messages through a dating app, with a man calling himself 'Alex', which police say is a false identity.

How many deer actually live in Okotoks?

Okotoks has so many deer living in town, they have a yearly practice of counting them.

The yearly deer count came about due to the safety concerns urban deer present to people, pets, and vehicles, as well as the impact they have on local vegetation and the economic implications present when managing their population.

This annual deer count is a way to monitor the population and demographics of the deer, which will help the Town's urban deer action plan.

A new poll suggests Canadians' sense of national pride has surged in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs and threats against the country's sovereignty.

The poll, conducted by Leger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies, says that the number of people saying they're proud to be Canadian has jumped from 80 per cent in November 2024 to 86 per cent this month.

Foothills County to vote on housing development east of Aldersyde today

Foothills County Council will vote on a large, proposed development east of Aldersyde on Wednesday (March 12).

The Highfield & Rowland Acres Area Structure Plan (ASP) is up for second and third readings, after receiving its first reading in June of 2024.

The development would consist of two neighbourhoods (the Highfield & Rowland Acres), situated east of Aldersyde and separated by both the Highwood River and Highway 547.

The proposal includes several non-residential land uses, including a school site, an equestrian facility, and a fire hall.
