Premier Smith calls Trump's tariffs a 'betrayal' that broke trust between the two countries

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith held a media conference on Wednesday (March 5) to provide more information on how her government is responding to the tariffs.

Smith called the 25 per cent tariffs placed on all Canadian goods and the 10 per cent tariffs placed on energy products "unjustified," and "a clear breach of the North American Free Trade agreement, or CUSMA, that was signed by President Trump during his first term." 

The Provincial government is looking for more input on passenger rail line though virtual and in-person open houses

There is a plan to bring a passenger rail system to Alberta.

After it was officially announced last April that the Government of Alberta was creating plans for the new rail system, which would help to connect communities in Alberta, including Okotoks.

The provincial government is in the process of creating a Passenger Rail Master Plan, which will help to assess how feasible it is to have a passenger rail system in the province.

That includes regional, commuter, and high-speed services.

Trump grants tariff exemption at request of Big Three automakers in North America

U.S. President Donald Trump says he's granted a one-month tariff exemption for any vehicles coming through the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt says the Big Three automakers — Stellantis, Ford and General Motors — asked for an exemption to the tariffs when they spoke to Trump.

Leavitt says reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect April 2 but the president is granting a month-long exemption so those automakers are not placed "at an economic disadvantage."

High River RCMP investigating damage to local home and vehicles ▶️

The High River RCMP are investigating the damage that was inflicted on a local couple's home and vehicles.

On Tuesday (March 5) at 6:36 a.m., the High River RCMP received a mischief complaint at a residence in town.

The person who called in to complain reported that two of their vehicles were damaged and a window in the house was broken, potentially around 12:30 a.m.

High River RCMP are asking for assistance in identifying the person of interest (POI) in this investigation.

Local artistic swim team swims circles around the competition

A local swim club is celebrating a couple of recent wins.

Foothills Artistic Swimming's novice team placed first in the Alberta Artistic Swimming's Northern Lights Competition in Calgary back in January, and just over a week ago, two solo swimmers qualified to compete in the 2025 Canada Artistic Swimming national competition.

"We are incredibly proud of our Novice Team. For them to compete for the first time and come away with a gold medal is a testament to their hard work and enthusiasm," said the club's president, Kelly Zadko.

High River Hospital launches 'Mother's Milk Bank' program

The High River General Hospital has worked out a partnership with NorthernStar Mother's Milk Bank.

High River Maternity will benefit from this relationship as they will have a dispensary option for local parents wanting donated mothers' breast milk.

Some mothers have difficulties generating breastmilk and some require more for medical reasons, so they are hopeful this will fill the need.

Marie Corns, with the High River Maternity Unit, stated in a release she was thrilled with the opportunity.

Siksika Nation is receiving federal funding to enrich Indigenous tourism experiences 

The federal government is providing money to help grow and enrich Indigenous tourism experiences in Canada.

Through this funding, 10 projects across Canada will receive financial support to help improve tourism in the community.

One of those projects includes the Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park at Siksika Nation.

The Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park is receiving $500,000 to enhance their exhibits, improve tipi camping, and their theatre facilities, as well as prepare for the 150th Anniversary of Treaty 7 in 2027.
