Former PM Harper blasts Liberal leadership candidate Mark Carney's economic record

Former prime minister Stephen Harper is taking shots at Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney's economic record days before the party gathers to choose its next leader.

In his bid to win the Liberal leadership, Carney has campaigned on his economic record as governor of both the Bank of Canada and later the Bank of England.

His campaign website says Carney "guided Canada through one of the most turbulent economic periods in modern history, protecting jobs and helping ensure that Canada came out stronger."

Missing buffalo skull found after being removed from beloved Okotoks art piece

A brass buffalo skull that went missing from a public art piece in Okotoks has been found.

The sculpture sits in the middle of Westridge Close Park, and features several buffalo skulls, with the topmost one having gone missing on the weekend of Feb. 22.

Installed by T'suu T'ina artist Rocky Barstad of High River in 1992, the art piece is beloved by the residents of Westridge Close, who rallied to find the skull after it was discovered missing.

Trump says threatened economywide tariffs will hit Canada, Mexico on Tuesday

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy, will start Tuesday, tipping the continent into a trade war.

"No room left for Mexico or for Canada (to make a deal)," Trump said at the White House.

Trump's executive order to implement economywide tariffs was delayed until Tuesday after Canada and Mexico agreed to introduce new security measures at the border.

The Okotoks Municipal Office has an art exhibit for the Famous Five

An art exhibit in the Okotoks Municipal Centre is honouring the five Alberta suffragists known as the Famous Five.

Back in 1927, the Famous Five launched a legal challenge to the British North America Act, which was preventing women from being recognized under the official term "person".

Since they weren't listed as 'persons', women were not able to be appointed to the Senate.

Dozens of local businesses from High River and Foothills County flocked to the Highwood Centre from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the third annual event.

From local businesses to non-profit groups, they intermingled with guests and each other, furthering relationships within our community.

High River's Chamber of Commerce organized it again and Executive Director Lisa Szabon-Smith was thrilled with how the day went.

Diamond Valley's Scott Seaman Sports Rink is now closed for the season

As you can well imagine with the warm temperatures the Foothills experienced last week, the outdoor rink is now closed.

The Scott Seaman Sports Rink is now officially closed, even though there's snow and colder temperatures today, Monday, March 6.

The refrigeration system has been turned off for safety reasons, they have to close it as the ice will continue to deteriorate.

However, the Town shared there are some last-minute cancellations at the Oilfields Regional Arena.

Saturday's high got up to 16° and it hit 12° on Sunday.

However, it should warm up within a day or so with a high of 6° by tomorrow and soaring up to 12° by this Saturday.
