Students in Okotoks are going bald to help out those with cancer

A group of local kids are shaving their heads to help those with cancer.

Students at the École BeauSoleil Francophone school in Okotoks are participating in Kids Cancer Care's Rock Your Locks campaign.

The principal of École BeauSoleil, Martin Camirand, says he started participating in this campaign over a decade ago while he was working at a school in Airdrie.

He started doing it with a couple of teachers who had kids in their lives who were living with cancer at that time.

Another trio of Dawgs are returning to the 2025 roster

The Okotoks Dawgs have announced another trio of players returning to Seaman Stadium for the 2025 season.

Okotoks True Grit award winner Logan Grant will be back in Dawgs uniform for a third season. Grant was a force last season during his 41 games played. He accumulated 39 runs on 49 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 32 RBIs, 18 walks, and 15 stolen bases.

Diamond Valley has moved to bi-weekly pickup for compost

Now that autumn has fully settled in and with winter approaching, the Town of Diamond Valley won't be picking up compost as frequently.

As of November 6, the Town has moved their compost collection schedule to a bi-weekly rotation.

The Town decided to break up the compost collection, so that the Black Diamond side of town will have their compost picked up one week, then crews will go to the Turner Valley side of town the following week to collect their compost, and so on until the end of March.

Protein Industries Canada partnering for improvement of plant-based cheese

Earlier this year, Protein Industries Canada announced a project and partnership with agriculture companies to help improve plant-based products including cheese. Partnering with Daiya Foods, Ingredion, Ingredion Plant Based Specialties (IPBPS) and Lovingly Made Flour Mills; the goal is to use Canadian grown crops such as peas and faba beans to help improve the taste, texture, and overall quality of plant-based cheese.  

Nanton flags are at half-mast to honour late councillor

The Town of Nanton has lowered their flags in honour of a former councillor.

The flags went down to half-mast yesterday (Nov. 14) to honour the former Councilor, the late Mr. Charles "Dick" Fenton, and will remain lowered until November 15.

Mr. Fenton was born on December 7, 1943, in Cornwall, Ontario, and married his teenage sweetheart, Andrea Cunningham in 1965.

They had two children, Erin and Andrew.

Rural Municipalities of Alberta has a Vulcan on its board

The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) recently held elections for their presidency.

They held the election at the organization's annual Fall Convention, and they elected Lara Westerlund as their new president.

Westerlund has served as Vice President for the organization since 2017, which has given her extensive experience in the role, on top of her strong commitment to advocating for rural municipalities in Alberta.

Intersection closure in Foothills County will detour traffic for weeks

An intersection in Foothills County is going to be closed for almost two weeks.

The intersection between 256 St W and 210 Ave W will be closed, daily, from November 12 to November 22.

It will be closed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day, but traffic will still be able to get around the closure.

The detour will take them to either 256 St W, 240 St W, or Highway 22.

The County apologizes for any inconveniences this closure may cause.

Keep your eyes peeled for a porcupine near École Senator Riley Middle School

If you're out walking your dog near École Senator Riley Middle School be on the lookout for a porcupine.

Chelsea Roeters lives in the area and says the porcupine has been hanging around for the last four nights.

It's not causing any issues but it's a good reminder to keep your dog on a leash.

Road near Okotoks Costco will be closed for a week

A weeklong road closure is in place in Okotoks.

Southbank Crescent, Costco and Save On Foods, will be closed from November 13-19 due to deep utility tie-in work in the area.

It's being done on behalf of a lot developer in the area, and the Town of Okotoks is reminding drivers to use caution while work is in progress.

Santa, elves, and a few new additions planned for the Salvation Army toy drive

If you're looking to help out a family in need this Christmas, the Salvation Army's 5th annual toy drive is coming up.

New officers, Renee and Bill Mailman with the High River Salvation Army are really excited about helping out our community.
