Man charged in fatal Calgary hit-and-run after semi-truck found in Rocky View County

A 25-year-old man has been charged after Calgary police located a semi-truck in Rocky View County that was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision earlier this week.

Calgary Police Service announced it will deploy photo radar enforcement throughout April in 18 neighbourhoods and active construction zones. 

According to CPS, mobile photo radar units will focus on Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Bridlewood, Capitol Hill, Collingwood, Dover, Forest Lawn, Highland Park, Hillhurst, Marlborough, Panorama Hills, Rundle, Skyview Ranch, Sunalta, Taradale, Temple, Varsity, and Whitehorn.

Booming Alberta construction faces major labour crunch by 2034: report

 

Alberta’s construction sector is facing significant labour shortages despite recent growth, with the province needing to recruit 59,000 construction workers by 2034, according to a report released Thursday by BuildForce Canada.

Even with Alberta’s younger demographic projected to provide 43,600 first-time entrants under the age of 30, a gap of 15,400 workers will remain unfilled by 2034.

Multiple traffic incidents across Calgary, amid winter road conditions on key commuter routes, slowed Airdrie drivers Thursday morning.

Southbound 14 Street at Stoney Trail NW was affected by a traffic incident. On the northeast side, a collision blocked the left lane on eastbound Airport Trail at 60 Street NE. Further west, a separate incident blocked the right lane on northbound Stoney Trail at McKnight Boulevard NE.

Snowfall warning skips Airdrie —but roads don't care

Drivers heading in and out of Airdrie can expect winter driving conditions again this morning, with snow-covered lanes, icy shoulders, and slippery conditions on major routes on Wednesday after overnight snowfall blanketed the region.

The QEII from the Calgary city limits to north of the Highway 2A junction was partly covered in snow, with Alberta 511 reporting slush, icy wheel paths and good visibility. Secondary conditions included icy sections and snow on the shoulder.

Inside Airdrie and south toward Calgary, conditions remained slick.

Sean Secord named Liberal candidate for Airdrie-Cochrane

Sean Secord has been named the Liberal candidate for the Airdrie-Cochrane riding in the upcoming federal election.

In an email to DiscoverAirdrie, Secord said he is eager to connect with residents of Airdrie, Cochrane and surrounding areas to hear their concerns and discuss his priorities.

"I am particularly interested in addressing aspects of healthcare as this consistently emerges as a priority issue, and, ultimately, our health, social determinants of health, and access to vital resources are interconnected with every aspect of our lives," he said.

Chinook’s Edge students shine at central Alberta science fair

Two Chinook’s Edge students advanced to the national science fair after winning gold medals at the Central Alberta Rotary Science Fair at Red Deer Polytechnic on March 29.

Claire Friesen, a Grade 9 student from Cremona School, won a gold medal and “Best of Fair” in the Grade 7 to 12 category and was invited to the national science fair. Her project is called “What goes up must come down.” This is Friesen’s third invitation to attend the national science fair.
