This past Sunday, April 14th, the 3rd annual Winnipeg Baroque Festival kicked off. Founded in 2022 this momentous festival has proven to be a highlight of the month of April and the spring season. It has truly proven to be a glorious way to fanfare in the warm Winnipeg Spring weather.
Meet the McLellan finalists: cellist Sam Nadurak
This week, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg welcomes three finalists to perform alongside the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in the WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance.
The prestigious competition awards a total $20,000 in prize monies, providing career funding and performance opportunities to Manitoba-born and Manitoba-educated musicians.

Right now we are currently in the midst of the third annual Winnipeg Baroque Festival. The festival started this past Sunday with Dead of Winter and All The King’s Men performing two amazing concerts.
One of the concerts that has become a crown jewel in the Winnipeg Baroque festival is the Annual Bach Marathon Concert that is hosted by the Royal Canadian College of Organists.
This Saturday at 1:00pm at Young United Church, the College will welcome literally dozens of musicians to the stage to perform and let audience members revel in the music of Bach.
‘A certain genius’ in the opera ‘Carmen’: soloists Daniel Okulitch and Lara Secord-Haid
Manitoba Opera’s “Carmen” production opened over the weekend to a nearly packed Centennial Concert Hall.
Post-performance reviews were glowing, with the production enthusiastically reviewed by experienced opera goers and newcomers alike, according to Lara Secord-Haid.
“Just hearing people come up afterwards and say, ‘this was my first opera and I’m definitely coming back,’” she recounts. “It’s just the warmest feeling in the world.”
Meet the new Executive Director of the Manitoba Band Association: Brent Johnson in conversation on his first day
The Manitoba Band Association is a non-profit charitable organization which fosters, promotes and encourages the establishment, growth and development of bands and band activity in the province.
And they are doing it under the guidance of a new executive director.
Brent Johnson officially stepped into the role on Monday, April 15 and began his day with an interview on Winnipeg’s Classic 107.
“I haven’t even logged into my email yet,” says Johnson with a laugh when asked how the job has been going thus far.
Encore Encore!! – Pianist Burkard Schliessmann releases fabulous new recording
On November 17 2023, The Divine Art Recording label released a fabulous double CD that features the renowned German pianist Burkard Schliessmann. Called Live and Encores, this recording features the music of Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin and showcases Schliesshmann’s wonderful interpretations of this music ranging from the baroque to high romanticism.
Intermezzo at 1:00 this week: Celebrating the recording legacy of Murray Perahia
On Friday, April 19th, the American pianist Murray Perahia will celebrate his 77th birthday.
Widely considered to be one of the greatest living pianists in world today, Murray (Moshe) Perahia was born in the Bronx in 1947 to Sephardic-Jewish parents who originally came from Greece.
Perahia would go on to study at Mannes College in New York, with his mentor Mieczyslaw Horoszowski. Perahia would also end up studying at the Marlboro Festival in the summers. It’s there where he would meet and perform along the likes of Rudolf Serkin and Pablo Casals.

From April 9 to the 21st, Prairie Theatre Exchange is presenting a one-woman play that is a beautifully meditative tale of loss, and our own mortality.
Based on The American Novelist Joan Didion’s Pulitzer nominated autobiographical book The Year of Magical Thinking. This play of the same name is Joan Didion’s adaptation of her book. The play also draws on themes to come from her final memoir “Blue Nights.”
All the Kings Men offer ‘Restorative’ singing in festival debut
On opening night of the Winnipeg Baroque Festival, the all-male liturgical choir All the Kings Men present 17th Century English music in the resonant acoustic of College Chapel of St. John the Evangelist at the University of Manitoba.
