Poilievre pledges veterans' supports; Carney offers cheaper access to parks, museums

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to cut red tape and step up support for veterans Saturday, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney pledged to make visiting national parks and museums more affordable for Canadian families.

Poilievre unveiled his party's plan for veterans during a press conference in Nepean, the suburban Ottawa community that contains the neighbouring ridings where he and Carney are running. 

Carney did not have any public events scheduled. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's itinerary shows he will hold an evening event in Timmins, Ont.

New initiative hopes to boost consumer confidence for Canadian meat products

Canadian producers will have a new way to make sure they can say their product is upholding sustainability, as the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) is unveiling their participation in the Protein PACT Sustainability Framework. The initiative will look to uphold sustainability standards across the country for Canada's beef producers.

Lauren Martin, the Senior Director of Public Affairs and Corporate Council for CMC, says that it was made in cooperation with our southern neighbours.

Sask. budget boosts funding for short line railways by nearly 90 per cent

The Saskatchewan government is nearly doubling its investment in short line railways, a move being welcomed by industry leaders who say it will improve safety, infrastructure, and economic resilience across rural parts of the province.

The 2025-26 provincial budget includes a $470,000 increase to the Short Line Railway Improvement Program (SRIP), bringing the total annual funding to $1 million. The money will be distributed among 13 short line railways operating in Saskatchewan.

Big changes coming to final-year examinations for Sask students

A big change is coming to how Saskatchewan students will wrap up their final year of high school, one that will more closely align with those in other provinces.

The Government of Saskatchewan is winding down the Grade 12 provincial examination program at the end of August this year while work continues to develop a provincewide student assessment program.

"Bread and Water" spans decades of food and prairie life for writing dee Hobsbawn-Smith

The One Book One Province tour came to Humboldt on Thursday night as dee Hobsbawn-Smith dropped into the Reid Thompson Library to read from her collection of essays, Bread and Water. 

The book is a collection of writings that spans decades of work, starting with her days as a restauranteur in Calgary at her locally focused eatery, Foodsmith. Some of the pieces appeared in the Calgary food publication Calgary Palette, or as part of her freelance work for the Calgary herald. 

Cradled by community - a time to give back

In the summer of 2024, Discover Humboldt brought readers the story of the Crawley family and courageous Emma’s courageous health battle brought on by complications with her liver.  

The Crawleys migrated to Edmonton for medical care while Emma was tended to at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Emma awaited a liver donor, and as her condition fluctuated, the on-again off-again surgery hung over the family like a cloud.

The Lions Club of Wakaw will soon commemorate its 75th anniversary — a distinguished diamond milestone that honors three-quarters of a century dedicated to service, leadership, and community building. 

On Saturday May 3, the Lions Club in Wakaw will be recognizing the occasion with an event that invites the entire community to celebrate the important milestone.  

Slate of candidates set for federal election

The countdown is on toward this year’s federal election called for April 28. 

As of April 9, the slate of candidates has been finalized. Discover Humboldt will be monitoring activities in three ridings: Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek which includes Humboldt, Yorkton – Melville with its western border at Highway 6 including Watson, and Moose Jaw – Lake Centre – Lanigan which includes Lanigan, Watrous and areas south.
