Richard Albert Blackport passed away peacefully with family by his side at Humboldt District Hospital on June 30, 2024. Richard was born at Sec. 23 Tp. 31 R.21 W2nd, east of Lockwood on February 9, 1928 to Jacob and Mary (nee Fischer) Blackport. They moved to the farm 2 miles south and 5.5 miles east of Lockwood in 1939. He walked both ways to attend Otterburn and Howart schools, later completing Grade 10 by correspondence.

Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan named Canada's newest chief of the defence staff

The federal government says it is naming Lt.-Gen. Jennie Carignan as defence chief, making her the first woman to hold the Canadian Armed Forces' top job.

Carignan is currently the military's chief of professional conduct and culture, a job created in the wake of the sexual misconduct crisis. 

Several high-ranking leaders were forced to step down from their posts after they were accused of sexual misconduct in 2021, prompting a damning external report that called for culture change.

SHSAA Service Award goes to Raymore's Travis Flahr

Raymore’s Travis Flahr was recently awarded the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s Service Award at the SHSAA Annual General Meeting. This award is given annually by the SHSAA to honor those who have provided outstanding leadership and service and the promotion of high school athletics within their school athletic district, Travis’s district being the Horizon Central Athletic Association. 

Heroes Christopher and Joseph Novecosky honoured posthumously with Carnegie Medal

In an incredible act of heroism and sacrifice, Joe and Chris Novecosky rushed to the aid of family members who had fallen through the ice on Humboldt Lake last November.  

Joe and Chris perished in their efforts to rescue seven-year-old Ava Novecosky and six-year-old Evelyn Novecosky who had been playing on the frail ice. For their heroism, the pair has posthumously been awarded the Carnegie Medal for Heroism. 

HCI's Marie Millette wins HCAA's Kent Lessmeister Scholarship

The Horizon Central Athletic Association proudly announced the recipient of the 2024 Kent Lessmeister Memorial Scholarship.  

This year’s deserving recipient is graduate Marie Millette from Humboldt Collegiate Institute. Marie will be attending St. Peter’s College in Muenster in the fall of 2024 to attain her first year in Kinesiology and will then be heading to the University of Saskatchewan to complete her degree.  

AAA18U Red Sox get it done at the plate over Z7 Sun Devils

The East Central AAA18U Red Sox got to work early and remained relentless at the plate for a 9-1 win over the Zone 7 Sun Devils at James Korte Field on Tuesday night.  

Cam Marshak hit the first of two homers on the evening to put the Sox up in the first. Carter Dosch followed up with a single for a second run and a wild pitch allowed the third in the opener.  

Marshak drove in another pair of runs on his second homer in inning two.  

Trudeau missing Calgary Stampede this summer, his only absence outside COVID-19 years

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's summer campaign circuit will not include a stop at the Calgary Stampede.

The annual 10-day rodeo and festival is usually a must-do event for politicians and Trudeau hasn't missed a summer except for the COVID-19 years of 2020 and 2021.

But his office confirms there will be no pancake flipping, cowboy-hat tipping or crowd-hopping for the prime minister this year.

There was no immediate explanation provided for his absence.

The Stampede officially begins Friday with a parade and runs until July 14.
