Rhett Chute says NEXAT reached out to them earlier in the summer to see if they would be interested in trying the prototype, and they were able to reach an agreement.

Ottawa sets 100-day timeline to fix CRA call centre delays

The federal finance minister said Tuesday he wants to address service delays at the Canada Revenue Agency within 100 days, even as Ottawa plans spending cuts across the public service.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne set the timeline in a letter to Liberal MP Karina Gould, chair of the House of Commons finance committee, which was posted to his X account Tuesday morning.

In that letter, he said it's "increasingly apparent" the CRA is not meeting Canadians' standards.

Portage Judo Club seeks Rotary Support for new mats

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie heard a unique request for support at its regular lunch meeting on Tuesday, as Sensei Brian Case of the Portage Judo Club presented the need for funding to replace the club’s failed training mats.

The local Judo club, which focuses on building character in young athletes, is facing an unexpected financial challenge after the Velcro seams on its specialized mats failed prematurely, creating a potential safety hazard.

This marks the first time in the club’s history that it has actively sought financial support from the community.

Portage Learning and Literacy Centre hosts open house Wednesday

The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre is opening its doors today (September 3) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., inviting the public to learn about its wide range of programs and services.

Lead teacher Laurie Collier says the event is especially geared toward students, though anyone is welcome to stop by. The centre provides education programs, employment supports, and resources for newcomers. The open house is seen as a key way to connect with potential learners and recruit new students.

Mild and wet winter may be in store for Southern Manitoba

It is still summer, yet The Old Farmer's Almanac has just released its winter weather outlook.

Carol Connare is Editor of The Old Farmer's Almanac, which released its 2026 edition, which, of course, includes forecasts for the upcoming seasons.

"For your region, we are calling for a warmer-than-normal winter," says Connare. "Of course, that doesn't mean that it will be balmy, because it's pretty cold there."

Federal NDP launches leadership race

The federal NDP officially launched the race to find its next leader on Tuesday, leaving seven months for interested candidates to mount a campaign.

The next NDP leader will be elected at a national convention in Winnipeg in March.

In a news release, the party says there has been strong interest in the leadership contest since Aug. 20, when the application packages were made available.

SEMHL announces Aces have been removed from the league for 2025/26 season

The South-Eastern Manitoba Hockey League announced Tuesday that an earlier decision from Hockey Manitoba has been reversed, meaning the Ste. Anne Aces are no longer part of the SEMHL, and will not play in the 2025-26 season.

CN Rail prepares to ramp up operations

Missing Stonewall man found deceased near Springstein

The search for a 69-year-old man, who had been missing since mid-July, has come to a tragic end.

On August 30, a cat crate bearing Stewart Campbell’s last name was found in a wooded area of a field roughly three kilometres southwest of Springstein, Manitoba. The discovery prompted renewed search efforts by the Stonewall RCMP’s Search and Rescue team, alongside volunteers from Winnipeg Search and Rescue.

Two days later, on September 1, Campbell was found deceased in the area.
