Winnipeg police arrest 9 in crime suppression effort in William Whyte

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says it has launched a crime suppression initiative in the William Whyte neighbourhood following a surge in violent crime in February.

The area saw three homicides last month—two on February 15 in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue and another on February 27 in the 500 block of Magnus Avenue. Police also responded to multiple firearm-related offences, arsons, and assaults, raising concerns among both the community and law enforcement.

“We spend quite a bit of time at a job,” says Joel Maendel. “We’re often there for months at a time, so most of our customers – if not all – actually become our friends. It sounds cliche, but it’s true.”
