Ethics Commissioner announces new disclosure rules for MLAs

Manitoba's MLAs have a new set of rules to disclose potential conflicts of interest with their work and personal finances.

All members of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly must follow new disclosure requirements in The Conflict of Interest (Members and Ministers) Act. The act came into force on Oct. 4, 2023.

The act requires all MLAs to disclose all assets, liabilities and sources of income with a value over $5,000 for themselves and any spouse and dependants (subject to some exceptions).

Heading into the election the Progressive Conservative Party held 35 seats, the NDP held 18 seats, and the Liberals held three seats.

Traffic stop leads to trafficking and weapons charges against pair from Estevan

The Estevan Police Service reported that a Saturday night traffic stop of a vehicle in the downtown area resulted in charges against two people from Estevan.

Police charged 27-year-old Zack Elund with:

  • Trafficking Cocaine
  • Trafficking Fentanyl
  • Possessing of Proceeds of Crime Under $5000 (Canadian Currency)
  • Possession of Weapons for Dangerous Purpose
  • Operation (motor vehicle) while prohibited

And 29-year-old Angella Chouinard was charged with:

Providence Student Athlete of the Month uses soccer to build relationships

Giana Denora has been playing soccer for a decade and half. Considering that she’s just begun her Grade 12 year at Dakota Collegiate in Winnipeg, that’s nearly 90% of her life.

“I just fell in love with it,” she says. “I tried basketball, volleyball and track, and I still love track, but soccer stuck with me.”

The 43rd Manitoba provincial election has been called for Tuesday, October 3.

In a poll we ran two weeks ago, the Progressive Conservatives held the overwhelming majority with more than 51 per cent of respondents choosing blue. The NDP came in second with just over 24 per cent and the Keystone Party held almost 8 per cent in the poll. The Manitoba Liberal Party registered 3 per cent of the vote.

Police identify charges, suspects from last week’s drug bust

The Estevan Police reported charges Monday against three people in relation to a pair of search warrants being executed last week.

The EPS Drug/Intelligence Unit executed search warrants with EPS patrol units and the EPS/Weyburn Police Service Joint Tactical Support Team at a residence on the 400 block of 3rd Street and a residence on the 400 block of Willow Park Greens.

Police seized over 30 grams of cocaine and charged the following people:

Province paves way for new Saskatchewan Polytechnic campus in Saskatoon

For years, Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses have been composed of a central facility and satellite buildings for some of its programs throughout the cities they reside in. Now, the campus in Saskatoon will have all its programs housed in a brand new, centralized location. The Government of Saskatchewan announced a new, state of the art complex will be developed at Innovation Place on the University of Saskatchewan Main Campus. The two post-secondary institutions are entering into a partnership with the government, who is planning on a $200 million injection of funds.
