Tornado warnings end for south-central Manitoba, but more stormy weather on the way

Update, 5:45 a.m.: Environment Canada says that tornado warnings have now ended for south-central Manitoba. Severe thunderstorm warnings and watches for much of southern Manitoba remain in place.

"We didn't get any reports of a tornado," Kayla Bilous, a meteorologist with Environment Canada says. She says the warning was issued due to what meteorologists were seeing on radar.

Severe thunderstorm warnings and watches for southern Manitoba

Strong thunderstorms are pushing through southern Manitoba early Tuesday morning capable of producing winds upwards of 100 km/h along with large hail.

Environment Canada has been busy throughout the evening issuing a number of warnings and watches. Southwestern Manitoba was particularly in the path of several strong storms.

As of 4:05 a.m. areas under severe thunderstorm warnings include Winkler, Morden, Altona, Morris, and Brandon, among others.

The City of Winnipeg is among the many areas currently under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Highway 8 reopens after serious collision

Traffic is flowing once again on a highway just north of Winnipeg after a serious collision Monday evening shut it down for several hours.

Manitoba Infrastructure sent out a notice just after 11 p.m. that Highway 8 was closed at Highway 27.

The closure, near the St. Andrew's Airport, remained in place for just over five hours, reopening at 4:15 a.m.

There are not many details at this time, including how many vehicles were involved or the extent of any injuries.

STARS Air Ambulance was also dispatched to the same area around the time of the closure.

Another extremely hot and muggy day as most of Manitoba under heat warning

Temperatures are continuing to soar in Manitoba into the high 30s, with humidity making most areas feel more like 40 degrees on Sunday. That's prompted Environment Canada to issue heat warnings for most of the province.

Daytime highs between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius today across southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Police investigating homicide after injured man found at fire call

Police are investigating the death of a man who was discovered with serious injuries by firefighters who responded to a fire alarm on Friday evening.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that officers were called around 5:30 p.m. to the 500 block of Burnell Street for the report of an injured male. Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service found the man and called police.
 
The WPS says in a release that officers from the Central District attended and located an adult male suffering from upper-body injuries within the residence.

Heat warnings issued throughout much of Manitoba

Much of Manitoba is in store for a hot and muggy weekend, with humidex values reaching 40 degrees in some regions. 

That's prompted Environment Canada to issue a number of heat warnings, as humidex values will reach at least 35 for the next 3 days.

From Environment Canada:

Daytime highs between 30 and 35 degrees and overnight lows of 16 degrees and warmer are expected over the next few days.

Through the weekend, humidity will also be a concern over eastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba, where humidex values are forecast to approach 40.

Police renew calls for help in finding missing teen on 2 year anniversary

Mounties in Manitoba are appealing to the public to help them solve the disappearance of a "kind, quiet, shy, 16-year-old girl" who went missing two years ago.

Tammy Nattaway went missing in mid-July of 2020 from her community of Kistiganwacheeng (Garden Hill), Manitoba. Her family has told police that the young girl was not known to go off by herself and when she didn’t come home, they knew immediately that something was wrong.

Community searches were conducted, and the RCMP was contacted.

Man rushed to hospital after officer involved shooting

A man who was allegedly armed with a gun in front of an Osborne Village home was shot by police Wednesday afternoon. 

The Winnipeg Police Service says in a release sent out Wednesday evening that officers were called for reports of a man armed with a gun in the 300 block of Gertrude Avenue. The call came in around 3 p.m. and officers from the North, West, and East Districts, as well as the Tactical Support Unit resounded.

Police say they located the armed man in front of a residence.

First case of monkeypox confirmed in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Health Authority reported Wednesday afternoon that Saskatchewan has its first confirmed case of monkeypox.

A Saskatchewan resident contracted what public health officials call a rare disease brought on by infection with monkeypox virus.

"The risk in Saskatchewan and Canada remains low, but residents are encouraged to be aware of the symptoms and contact a health care provider if they suspect they may be infected," Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Julie Kryzanowski said.
