Highways both Southbound and Northbound of Airdrie are becoming slick as snow continues to fall on Thursday morning.
The QEII Southbound towards Calgary is partly covered in snow and there may be shoulder ice, along with icy wheel paths and slushy sections, while heading Northbound towards Crossfield and Carstairs, there are reports of freezing rain mixed with snow. However, those travelling East of Airdrie towards Beiseker on Highway 72 can expect the highway to be covered in snow with shoulder ice and slippery sections as well.
Motorists are reminded to give themselves extra commute time this morning and drive to the weather conditions.
"Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. Be prepared to adjust your driving to changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop," a snowfall warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada warned.
There is also a reminder that an over-dimensional load will be moved from Aldersyde to northwest of Airdrie. The load will be travelling:
- North on Highway 2A
- East on Highway 547
- North on Highway 24
- West on Highway 901
- North on Highway 24
- West on Highway 1
- North on Highway 9
- West on Highway 566
- North on Highway 772
- West on Township Road 280 to site
On Thursday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada stated that the snowfall warning had ended. Forecasts are now predicting that there will continue to be periods of light snow, with up to 5 centimetres accumulating over the southwestern sections around Airdrie and the surrounding areas. Gusting winds are expected up to 50 kilometres this afternoon.
