There were plenty of events happening down at the Humboldt and District SPCA to raise funds for all the puppies and kittens.

The SPCA was busy hosting BBQs and open houses throughout the summer to encourage people to come and see all the available animals for fostering or adoption.

“This has been an awesome year at the SPCA, we adopted out 161 animals this last year, 89 were cats and 72 were dogs,” stated Joanne Kosky with the SPCA

The organization also teamed up with various other organizations such as Humboldt Landscape and Leisure for a fundraiser to support operations and a new building at the pet shelter.

“As a board, we prioritize what we need in a new space, and we are hoping to have a proposal to the city in 2024. We just really need a facility where we can generate some income, where we can offer boarding services and doggy daycare.”

The organization is also looking to cut down on housekeeping costs with a new building.

The SPCA currently has a 2023 Christmas Wish List out for donations of much-needed items such as slower feeders for dogs, surgical recovery dog suits, and blow-up cones.

Donations of all kinds are welcomed by the SPCA, as they rely on donations from the public.

“We are fighting to keep our current doors open. Our vet bills are one of our biggest expenses, they continually are rising, and they really tapped heavily into our funding. Our funding comes from donations, fundraisers and adoptions, and we cannot thank the public enough for their support. Any time we have a dog or cat that needs a special operation, we will put a plea out for funds to help with that, and 9 times out of 10 we can get those bills covered. It’s an overwhelming feeling when you can do that from people just donating.”
