A 58-year-old man was the sole fatality of a multi-vehicle collision that occurred on Friday morning on the QEII, North of Airdrie. Mounties said the man was a resident of Fort Saskatchewan.
"Alberta RCMP advises the public that Highway 2 is fully reopened for travel in both directions. RCMP reminds the public to drive to the conditions of the road to avoid collisions," a late news release on Friday stated.
RCMP offered their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Early on Friday morning, conditions on the QEII north of Airdrie and towards Red Deer were in very poor condition. Multiple vehicle collisions were reported along the highway along Didsbury and Olds. However, the massive multi-vehicle collision that occurred at the Highway 27 Junction in the Southbound lanes of the QEII shut the highway turn for the better part of Friday.
Another collision near Didsbury shut down the highway for several hours travelling Northbound. Traffic was diverted via Highway 2A as an alternate route, though Mounties warned against non-essential travel.
Before noon, the Northbound lanes of the QEII between Olds and Didsbury had slowly begun to move after hours of complete standstill and gridlock due to multiple collisions, while the Southbound lanes opened just before 5 p.m. A previous towing ban that was in place has also been lifted.
