FINAL UPDATE: 

Tuesday, December 19, 2023, 3:25 p.m.: The County Regional Fire hazardous materials crews have successfully completed the transfer of diesel from the overturned tankers on Highway 43 at Range Road 133. County crews have been released from the response. 

The scene has been turned over to Alberta Environment and the trucking company to ensure remediation of the spill site is complete.   

Motorists are advised to continue to approach the area with caution, drive slowly, and follow the directions of the on-site flagging personnel who will remain on scene until the tanks can be removed.  

This is the County of Grande Prairie’s final update on the incident.

UPDATE: Tuesday, December 19, 2023, 1:00 p.m. – Motorists are advised that intermittent traffic continues on Highway 43 at Range Road 133 as the County Regional Fire Service’s hazardous materials crew continues their work to offload the contents of the overturned tanker truck.

The crew gained access to the leaking tanker, allowing vacuum trucks to remove the overturned tanks' contents.

Crews will remain on scene until the contents have been emptied.

Motorists are advised to slow down when approaching the scene of a tanker truck rollover on Highway 43 at Range Road 133 where County Regional Fire crews from the Hythe, Clairmont, and Beaverlodge stations are currently responding. No injuries have been reported. 

The tanker truck is carrying diesel which is spilling from the tank. The County Regional Fire Service’s hazardous materials team is on the way to the site to mitigate the spill. At this time, the spill does not pose a risk to the public.  

Motorists should watch for traffic control personnel as traffic flow is being affected while crews conduct their work.
