Stockings for Seniors continues to brighten the holidays for many people.

During the days leading up to Christmas, volunteers and staff delivered the stockings to Steinbach area seniors who made it onto the “Nice List.”

Audrey Harder, Executive Director at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre, says Stockings for Seniors is a heartwarming initiative.

“Watching people receive those stockings and have no idea who bought them for them, and sometimes they do, but a lot of times it's anonymous and that's great too, because there is somebody out there thinking about you because your name just doesn't come from the air, it comes from somebody who cares.”

They delivered 75 stockings this year, the second highest number since the program began.

Harder says it is extra special to be part of Stockings for Seniors.

“The calls we get afterwards saying, ‘who gave this to me?’ Sometimes, we don't know, or we can't say because it’s anonymous. And just the gratitude and to be loved is great, to be belong somewhere is great. So, this one thing will do that for somebody. We should keep doing it, I think.”

Stockings included a variety of items like Christmas snacks, activity books, a tree ornament and gift certificates for Meals on Wheels.

Harder believes the items inside the stockings are not what makes it special. She says it’s the feeling the recipient gets when they realize that someone is thinking about them, that is what makes Stockings for Seniors really special.
