Saskatchewan families will begin the new year with a bit of financial relief.

As of January 1st, 2024, SaskEnergy and SaskPower will be removing the federal carbon tax from home heating.

According to a governmental press release, this will result in savings for roughly 98% of Saskatchewan families with a savings of approximately $400 in 2024.

"Heating accounts for up to 60 percent of power consumption during the winter months for customers who rely on electric heat, so SaskPower will eliminate the carbon tax on heating by reducing the federal carbon tax rate rider on their bills by 60 percent" according to the press release.

The federal carbon tax will be zero billed, appearing as both a charge and a reversal credit, on bills for usage on or after January 1, 2024.

SaskEnergy customers on an Equalized Payment Plan will see equalized payment amounts adjusted beginning in February.
