As temperatures continue to cool many anglers will be looking forward to beginning their ice fishing season.
Matt Tyree, Director of Fisheries with the Saskatchewan Ministry of the Environment reminds participants why it's particularly important to practice caution this ice fishing season.
"We have had unusually warm temperatures this year as everyone is aware," he said. "And it's impacted the ice and ice thickness, variability of ice thickness, and the safety of the ice. It's just something that we want to keep top of mind for any anglers."
In addition, Tyree provides some pertinent safety tips for icy anglers.
"Just make sure you are planning, that you are well prepared, and make sure you are checking the thickness of the ice before traveling out. Make sure to check any sources available whether it's online or chatting with other anglers just to get an update on ice conditions and the safety of locations you are planning to head to."
Anglers should also ensure they are familiar with all the rules and regulations for fishing which can be found in the Saskatchewan Annual Anglers Guide, available from vendors who issue anglers licenses as well as the ministry field office and online.
