The Swift Current Broncos mini two game winning was snapped on Saturday night, a 6-5 overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

However, it marks the fourth straight game that the Broncos have earned a point.

While the Broncos earned the overtime point in the contest, Assistant Coach Regan Darby said it wasn’t their best performance in recent memory.

“I think we had opportunities to win the hockey game tonight,” Darby said. “As far as playing good enough to win, I felt like at the beginning of the game there giving up that first one kind of put us back on our heels a little bit. We held them to six shots there for a bit and I felt like they could have taken control of the game at that time, but it just didn’t happen.”

The Broncos gave up a goal just 36 seconds into the game, courtesy of Nicholas Johnson, and so started the seasaw battle. Clarke Caswell responded for the Broncos before the Wheat Kings retook the lead later in the first. That was responded by Josh Filmon’s 22nd of the year and things were tied 2-2 after one period.

Rylan Gould and Jayden Wiens each scored in the second period and things remained tied after two periods, at 3-3 this time. Brett Hyland gave Brandon another lead, but halfway through the third, Gould’s second of the night set up a great finish as things were even at 4-4 after 60 mintues of hockey.

In the overtime, Flamand would weave into the Broncos zone and notch his second of the night to give the Wheat Kings the 5-4 win.

Darby added that they had chances to take over the hockey game, but weren’t able to capitalize.

“Our power play had opportunities, we never connected on that,” he said. “And we’ve got a frustrated group who wants to score and we had a few good looks tonight, but they didn’t go in. So when you don’t score on the power play in games like that, you don’t win games.”

The Bronco powerplay was 0-for-7 in the game.

Joey Rocha stopped 9 of 12 in the first 40 minutes before giving way to Reid Dyck for the third period and overtime. Dyck stopped 10 of 12 in relief.

The Broncos are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Red Deer.
