A 47-year-old woman was sentenced to time served in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Tuesday for a string of thefts.
In a joint submission between Legal Aid lawyer Julie Knox and Crown prosecutor Rob Parker, Nicole Boughner pleaded guilty to six counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of failing to attend court, one count of breaching a probation condition and one count of assault.
According to Parker, there was a theft at Superstore on April 14 where Boughner used a reusable grocery bag to conceal over $943 in merchandise. She was approached by security outside the store and, after a struggle, dropped the items and fled the scene.
Then on June 24th, four bottles of liquor were stolen from the Superstore liquor store. Boughner was identified through video surveillance and arrested the following day.
On Nov. 15, two people fled the scene of a high-rise complex where two hall cameras were taken. Boughner was identified as one of the two people.
Boughner also pleaded guilty to thefts from Urban Trail, Walmart and another theft at Superstore.
She pleaded guilty to assault from an incident that occurred at Rexall Drugs. She was known to the staff and was asked to leave the store. Boughner then punched one staff member in the forearm and another in the face. According to Parker, neither victim was seriously injured.
Boughner had spent 26 days in custody and was credited for 39 days. Parker noted that she was still on a 12-month probation order from May of last year that will continue.
Knox said Boughner is originally from Ontario but had moved at Assiniboia to be with her son and get sober from drugs. However, she fell back into her addictions when the offences occurred. Knox said since then she’s detoxed while in custody and plans to live with her mother back in Ontario once released.
Judge Brian Hendrickson followed the joint submission, noting that she only has two more months to complete her probation.
