A security guard working at a Catholic college in Rhode Island was floored when students went above and beyond to brighten his day.
It's been over a decade since James has seen his family after moving to the United States from Nigeria.
When the students heard about this, they decided they needed to do something. That's when Brandon Reichert came up with the idea to start a GoFundMe.
"For those of you who don't know James, he truly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He greets everybody with a smile and always welcomes conversations no matter what time of the night you run into him."
The hope was to raise $3,500 to allow James to go home to Nigeria in June. Currently, they are sitting at over $27,000.
"It's just incredible to see how fast God works, especially in our community," said Reichert to WKRG-TV. "We never thought that number would be possible."
On Monday, the students presented James with the news that he would be able to visit his family. The memorable moment was captured on video and has since gone viral.
"We have something for you," said one student in the video. "James, you're 'Unc', you're the G.O.A.T, you're one of those people that really cares. You made the PC experience so good for us all. You told us a while ago that you wanted to see your family in Nigeria that you haven't seen in a long time. So, we came together, and we spread the word. Our gift to you is a trip to Nigeria."
This news left James speechless. He broke into tears, holding his head in his hands while he kneeled on the floor.
"Oh my God. How did I deserve this?" said James. "All I'm trying to do is to do the right thing."
He continued saying he didn't know how to thank them enough for such a special gift.
"I pray from the bottom of my heart that God will continue to protect you guys and make sure that you achieve your goals," said James. "I hope and pray that God will continue to bless you, bless your parents, be with you guys and guide you. This is unbelievable."
James hopes to travel home in June to see his family. All funds collected will go towards the trip.
