The Swift Current Broncos dropped a 6-3 decision to the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night to cap off the regular season.
The Broncos took a 2-0 lead after the first period thanks to goals from Conor Geekie and Clarke Caswell, but the Hitmen came back hard. Calgary scored five unanswered in the second including four of which that were on the powerplay.
The two teams then traded goals in the third period as Dawson Gerwing scored for the Broncos and Keets Fawcett for the Hitmen.
While the Broncos dropped this contest, they already knew their playoff opponent and the team was able to play a fair bit of younger players. Assistant Coach Regan Darby said it was a great opportunity for the up-and-coming Broncos.
“Sawyer Dingman had a really good game,” Darby said. “Jace McFaul looked really good out there, Bernie [Weston] in net looked at some pretty good shooters tonight with Yakemchuk and Tulk. I thought it was a good showing for those guys. So, some real positive moments for those guys and for the future of the Broncos.”
Dingman had two assists in the game, while Weston stopped 31` of 37 shots he faced in the game.
It was also the long-awaited return of Broncos defenceman Tyson Galloway who spent most of his career with the Hitmen before being traded to Swift Current. The Hitmen gave him some video recognition early in the game, and he was honoured with the second star of the game.
The Broncos now look ahead to the playoffs where they will take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes . The series will start on March 29 in Swift Current.
