Hundreds of people are recovering after the biggest earthquake in 25 years hit Taiwan on Wednesday.
Around 8:00 a.m. on April 3, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan leaving roughly 900 people injured and at least nine people dead. There are also many people trapped in the highway tunnels in Hualien County.
Taiwan's President-elect Lai Ching-te is saying the top priority right now is to rescue people. Ching-te visited the affected area roughly 200 miles south of Taipei.
The earthquake was big enough to cause aftershocks that could be felt around the entire island. It also caused tsunamis, triggering warnings for all of south Japan.
"After the warning, the tsunami started to hit some of the smaller islands closer to Taiwan," says Takeshi Takazawa in an interview. "A tsunami warning is not like crying wolf. It’s a serious business."
This area has been affected by six earthquakes with a 7 or higher magnitude in the past 50 years.
"Jesus is in control of everything, even this quake or tsunami. In the midst of that, God’s care, love, and protection are there," says Takazawa.
The vice president of Taiwan, Ching-te, tweeted how the country is responding as well as how grateful he is for all the help.
"The outpouring of global support is uplifting & deeply appreciated, as are the endeavours of our brave responders. My thoughts are with all affected as we work to recover & rebuild."
