A bail hearing in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Thursday was stopped and adjourned to the next day after the accused continually interrupted the proceedings.

Ryan Smallshaw appeared via telephone and was represented by Legal Aid lawyer Merv Shaw. During the proceedings, Crown prosecutor Suzanne Young was continually interrupted by Smallshaw while giving her submissions.

Shaw had asked his client multiple times not to speak for his own benefit. Judge David Chow also asked Smallshaw to stop interrupting and, in a rare move, raised his voice towards the accused.

Smallshaw apologized for the disruptions. However, Shaw stopped the proceedings because he didn’t feel comfortable continuing with the bail hearing without talking to his client about the interruptions. Shaw asked for a short adjournment to speak to Smallshaw.

Judge Chow put the matter over on Friday morning to continue the bail hearing.

Smallshaw is facing charges including sexual assault, sexual interference, resisting arrest, breaking and entering and breach of a release order.
