The community gathered to celebrate Manitoba’s 154th birthday at the Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) on Saturday, May 11.

The day began with planting a pansy for mom, hosted by the Steinbach and Area Garden Club.

Greetings from the program manager, Robert Goertzen took place in the Pavilion. MP Ted Falk, MLA Kelvin Goertzen, and Mayor Earl Funk shared stories of their family coming to Manitoba and the importance of celebrating Manitoba’s Birthday in Steinbach.

“We live in a blessed community,” stated Earl Funk.

The flag-raising ceremony took place outside, following free birthday cake for everyone.

MHV collaborated with Eastman Immigrant Services to put on family fun and fair games. Other planned activities were horse-drawn wagon rides, barrel train rides, a magician, live music, and a balloon artist.

“We love to celebrate together with our community,” explains Robert Goertzen. “It’s a free admission day, so it’s a great way to come and enjoy the outdoors, look at the Heritage buildings, walk around the pond, and do various things that we have available on our large campus, we love it.”

Many took advantage of the great weather and spent the day with their family at the museum grounds.

Robert Goertzen shared that they have a great team at MHV and many volunteers who help put on the events.

He went on to discuss what he loves about Manitoba Day. “My favourite part is seeing the interaction of many generations,” he says. “There are grandkids, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, neighbours. Everyone getting together and enjoying the day. It’s a great way to spend time together and to appreciate each other.”
