For those planning to travel to neighbouring British Columbia this Victoria Day Long weekend, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement Thursday morning due to a potential for snow.

The advisory is in effect for the Coquihalla Highway, Okanagan Connector, Allison Pass, Kootenay Pass, Begbie Summit, and Rogers Pass.

It is predicted that snow could fall overnight on Thursday to Friday morning and possibly early Saturday morning, with accumulation from two to five centimetres.

"Transportation routes may be impacted. Travellers should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions."

According to forecasts, an upper low will bring a cool airmass to higher elevations of the B.C. Interior tonight and into this long weekend. Colder air along with precipitation means the mountain passes can expect a dusting of snow overnight Thursday, and possibly overnight Friday.

For Allison Pass, the Coquihalla Highway, the Okanagan Connector and Begbie Summit, snow can be expected above 1000 metres. At Rogers and Kootenay Pass, snow is expected above 1300 metres.

While no similar advisories have been issued for Alberta's Rockies, weather for the long weekend may be cooler and rainy. Airdrie's local forecast is predicting very gusty winds on Friday and a few showers. Temperatures in the evening will plummet to minus 5. Saturday appears warmer with no rain predicted, while Sunday evening may see showers and three degrees overnight.
