The City of Grande Prairie invites residents to join in the celebration of Pollinator Week, taking place from June 17 to June 23.
As a dedicated Bee City, Grande Prairie is committed to promoting and protecting vital pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other essential creatures that support our ecosystems, food production, and biodiversity. Residents are encouraged to plant pollinator-friendly gardens, reduce pesticide use, and spread awareness about the importance of these creatures.
Throughout the week, the City has organized various activities and events to engage the community and highlight the importance of pollinators. On Wednesday, June 19, residents are encouraged to attend the first GP Grows Orchard Tour event at Mike Fedyna Park behind the Lutheran Church on 96th Street. From 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, participants will explore plants and weeds in our orchards and learn about creating pollinator-friendly habitats.
“Pollinator Week is an opportunity to educate the community about the critical role pollinators play in our daily lives.” Said Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton, “As a dedicated Bee City, these local initiatives and opportunities for community involvement aim to enhance the health and diversity of our ecosystem creating a strong quality of life for all our residents.”
Children are invited to participate in a rock painting activity, where they can paint rocks to resemble their favourite pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, or ladybugs. Photos of these painted rocks can be submitted for a chance to win a prize pack.
Teens and adults can join the "Pedal for Pollinators" photo challenge by capturing images of pollinators they encounter while biking on our scenic trails. Submissions for this challenge can also be entered for a chance at winning a fantastic prize pack.
