The Humboldt Hammerheads are diving straight into a busy year.
Since the beginning of May, the Hammerheads have been training for their competitive season, while the youngest swimmers have started developing the skills needed.
This week, the Hammerheads showed off the progress that they have made with the competitive season around the corner.
There are 70 swimmers with the Hammerheads, separated into three groups, the pups, the juniors, and the seniors. Ten swimmers' season ended this week, with the rest set for competitions throughout the summer.
Head Coach Lauryn MacLean feels it has been evident with all the swimmers. “We had some kids who came in and barely float and now they’re swimming across the pool.” MacLean, added, “With our older kids we have been refining our technique the whole year, just working on all of our strokes free, breast, back and butterfly and getting ready for competition for next week.”
Regina will mark the first stop in the Hammerhead's schedule, other stops include Watrous, Nipawin, Biggar, and Saskatoon. Before provincials at the beginning of August, the semis will be in Humboldt.
A big highlight in the schedule is the Summer Games in Lloydminster, from July 21-27. The provincial summer games have been absent, with the 2020 edition canceled due to COVID. MacLean pointed out that she competed in the last Saskatchewan Summer Games in 2016 when Estevan hosted, and now she finds herself guiding a new group of swimmers as the Head Coach of the Prairie Central District squad.
Joining MacLean on the Summer Games team are Cohen Gasper, Dylan Fleischacker, Noah Zimmerman, Sienna Zimmerman, and Sophia Zimmerman. MacLean said it’s a great accomplishment for the five swimmers competing in the Summer Games.
