Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) and Hythe Regional School (HRS) have each received grants from Inside Education’s A+ for Energy program, open to all K-12 schools in Alberta and providing up to $5,000 for projects that enhance student understanding of Canada’s energy landscape.
PWA was awarded $1,500 for its Bike Program, which will open a community bike shop for free bike repairs and maintenance. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste by reclaiming bikes and parts.
HRS received $5,000 for its "Building the Future: One ‘Light’ Step at a Time" project. Students will monitor solar panel electricity generation and explore ways to reduce energy consumption. They will also create presentations and mini-projects to share their findings with younger students.
Lead teachers Holly Gould and Debbie Harris from HRS, and Matthew Vavrek and Julian Camsell from PWA, received scholarships for a two-day professional development program and celebration dinner in August.
Mrs. Gould expressed excitement about the project’s impact on student learning and renewable energy practices, emphasizing the importance of opportunities like the A+ for Energy program for rural schools.
Funded by BP Canada, TC Energy, Cenovus, and Pembina Pipeline, the A+ for Energy program is in its 18th year and has awarded nearly $5 million to support energy education in Alberta schools.
